What is the Muslim Brotherhood and who Deals With Them?

In an executive order yesterday, President Trump set the groundwork for the designation of chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations, which would prohibit American from doing business with them and allow their assets in the U.S. to be frozen.

Which brings us to the question;  What is the Muslim Brotherhood all about?  I know one thing;  It's not good for the Jews.  Even Egypt has not allowed them in their country.  

The Society of the Muslim Brothers Muslim Brotherhood , is a transnational Sunni Islamist organization founded in Egypt by Islamic scholarImam and schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna in 1928. Al-Banna's teachings spread far beyond Egypt, influencing various Islamist movements from charitable organizations to political parties.  

As its influence grew, it opposed British rule in Egypt starting in 1936. al-Banna had been in contact with Amin al-Husseini (Sherif of Jerusalem-horrid rouser against Jews) since 1927. 

A central concern for the early Muslim Brotherhood was its pro-Arab activism for the Arab-Zionist conflict in Palestine, which in 1936–1939 (dates connecting with rise of Nazis, WWII) culminated in the great Arab revolt. While absent before the outbreak of the revolt, the Brotherhood now began to make use of aggressive anti-Jewish rhetorics which also targeted the Jewish community in Egypt. The official weekly of the Brotherhood, al-Nadhir, published a series of articles titled "The Danger of Jews", warning of alleged Jewish plots against Islam like Freemasonry or Marxism.

 In 1938 al-Nadhir demanded from Egypt's Jews to either adopt an openly anti-Zionist stance or to face "hostility". It also criticized the prominent role of Jews in Egypt's society and their prominence in journalism, commercial spheres and the entertainment industryal-Nadhir even called for a boycott and their expulsion, "for they have corrupted Egypt and its population."

 In another instance the Jews were referred to as a "societal cancer". 

The Brotherhood eventually distributed a list of Jewish business owners and called for their boycott, claiming that they supported the Zionists. Such conflations of Jews and Zionists were common.

                          Hitler with Amin al-Husseini:  Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, met with Adolf Hitler on November 28, 1941, in Berlin, Germany. The meeting took place in the Reich Chancellery and lasted for approximately 75 minutes. During the meeting, al-Husseini expressed that Arabs were Germany's natural friends because they shared common enemies: the British, the Jews, and the Communists. He sought Germany's support for Arab independence and for the "removal" or "annihilation" of a proposed Jewish national homeland in Palestine. 

In the years preceding World War II the Muslim Brothers grew connections with Nazi Germany, maintained via the Deutsches Nachrichtenbüro in Cairo and Amin al-Husseini,(worst anti-Semite of all)  who himself received funds from the Abwehr.Al-Husayni spoke often of a "worldwide Jewish conspiracy" that controlled the British and US governments and sponsored Soviet Communism. He argued that "world Jewry" aimed to infiltrate and subjugate Palestine, a sacred religious and cultural center of the Arab and Muslim world, as a staging ground for the seizure of all Arab lands.

 Being interested in strengthening a militant anti-British organization, Germany may have funded the Brotherhood as early as 1934. One later British source claimed that in 1936 alone, Germany transferred over £5.000. al-Banna and other members of the Brotherhood voiced admiration for aspects of Nazi ideology, including its militarism and its centralization revolving around a charismatic leader, but opposed others like its racial policies and ethnic nationalism. 

The outbreak of the war ended the relationship between Germany and the Muslim Brothers. al-Banna denied that he had ever received German funding. Italian funding of the Brotherhood is unlikely, as the latter vehemently opposed the Italian occupation of Libya.                           

        President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi:  Sisi led the 2013 Egyptian coup d'état, overthrowing Morsi on 3 July 2013. 

Demonstrations and sit-ins organized by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and Egyptian democracy followed. 

Morsi was first elected to parliament in 2000. He served as a Member of Parliament from 2000 to 2005, officially as an independent candidate because the Brotherhood was technically barred from running candidates for office under President Hosni Mubarak. He was a member of the Guidance Office of the Muslim Brotherhood until the founding of the Freedom and Justice Party in 2011, at which point he was elected by the MB's Guidance Office to be the first president of the new party.

 While serving in this capacity in 2010, Morsi stated of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict that "the two-state solution is nothing but a delusion concocted by the brutal usurper of the Palestinian lands."  I guess that's us, the Jews-the brutal usurpers.  

The heads of state in Egypt who have been in opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood are Gamal Abdel NasserAnwar al-SadatHosni Mubarak, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. All four have engaged in periods of repression, with el-Sisi outlawing the organization and leading a significant crackdown after his 2013 coup.                                    

   Zohran Mamdani won the New York City Mayor position against Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.  Cuomo, we've heard of.  Before his mayoral bid, Andrew Cuomo was the Governor of New York. He resigned in 2021.  

  • "Holy Land Five" Controversy: A 2025 New York Post article highlighted a 2017 rap song by Mamdani where he praised the directors of the Holy Land Foundation (HLF), a now-defunct charity that U.S. authorities in a 2008 trial found had funneled over $12 million to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Mamdani's lawyers stated that at the time of the song, the HLF leaders had not yet been convicted.
  • As far as that goes, in Support from Muslim Groups: Mamdani's campaign was supported by several Muslim advocacy and civil rights groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Critics of Mamdani have alleged that CAIR or its associated PACs have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a claim that CAIR leaders have denied.

  • Mamdani's Stance and Identity: Mamdani identifies as a Twelver Shia Muslim and a democratic socialist. Political analysts have pointed out that his progressive political platform—which includes support for LGBTQIA+ rights, universal childcare, and police reform—is in many ways inconsistent with the traditional conservative ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.
  • Does Muslim Brotherhood favor Shi'i or Sunni or both Muslim paths?
  • The Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist group, and Shi'i Islamists have a complex relationship marked by both historical ideological influence and present-day political tension. Some Shia Islamists, like Iran's leadership, were influenced by Muslim Brotherhood thinkers such as Sayyid Qutb and could potentially form alliances based on shared opposition to the U.S.. However, their relationship is also strained by sectarian differences and political competition, particularly between Iran and Sunni-dominated states, and the Brotherhood's historically anti-Shia stance can also be a point of tension. 

The primary, long-term goal of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is 

1. the establishment of a state, or

2. ultimately a global caliphate, governed solely by Sharia law

   A. This is to be achieved through a gradual, bottom-up Islamization of society, starting with individuals and families,

   B.  then expanding to the community 

   C.  and state. 

They are copying the aspects of our Jewish Law, as they have copied

Prohibitions in Sharia Law, which are considered haram (forbidden), include consuming pork and alcohol, gambling, interest-based transactions (riba), and certain types of contracts. Other prohibitions cover actions like murder and disrespecting parents, as well as specific practices such as the sale of intoxicating substances or illicitly obtained property. The prohibitions are diverse and range from personal conduct and dietary laws to financial and commercial activities. 
Examples of prohibitions

  • Food and Drink: Pork, alcohol, blood, and animals that have not been slaughtered in the Islamic way are forbidden.
  • Financial Transactions:
    • Riba: The taking or giving of interest on loans or investments is prohibited.
    • Maysir and Qimar: Gambling and other games of chance are forbidden.
    • Gharar: Sales that involve excessive uncertainty, ambiguity, or fraud are prohibited.
  • Personal Conduct:
    • Actions like murder, theft, fornication, and disrespecting one's parents are prohibited.
    • Certain behaviors, like public displays of affection, may be restricted in some applications of the law.
  • Commercial Activities:
    • Trading in intoxicating substances is forbidden.
    • Selling or buying things that are inherently unlawful is prohibited. 
    • And the worst:  About Women:
    • Sharia law's impact on women is not uniform, as it varies greatly by country due to different interpretations. While some interpretations have historically granted women rights regarding property and divorce, many modern interpretations, especially in certain countries, restrict women's rights through laws that govern marriage, divorce, inheritance, and public conduct. These restrictions can include: 
    • 1. requirements for male guardianship
    •  2. and modest dress, 
    •   3. with some harmful practices like child marriage and 
    •   4. female genital mutilation occurring under the guise of Sharia law. (they cut so the woman cannot enjoy sex.) Oy, vah ah voy!

Mamdani's Putting His Foot In It

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani stated that a Manhattan synagogue's use of "sacred space" to host an event by Nefesh B'Nefesh, an organization facilitating Jewish immigration to Israel, potentially promoted activities in violation of international law.  The ICJ is full of poppycock !  They always rule against Israel.  

             We'll have Professor Kontorovich give Zohran a lesson on Israel and the international  law, being he's lawyer of international law.  Under international law, occupation occurs when a country takes over the sovereign territory of another country. But the West Bank was never part of Jordan, which seized it in 1949 and ethnically cleansed its entire Jewish population. Nor was it ever the site of an Arab Palestinian state.

After Matthew Kassel, a Jewish Insider reporter, pressed Mamdani’s team about what he meant, the latter said that it “was specifically in reference to the organization’s promotion of settlement activity beyond the Green Line,” which “violates international law,” Kassel wrote. (I wonder if they have been reading anything of the Oslo Accords and who has been breaking the law by building in Israel's part C (eastern side of Judah and Samaria) when they have part A and part B?

After anti-Israel activists demonstrated outside a synagogue holding an event promoting Jewish immigration to Israel, also known as aliyah, the protest – which included chants of 'death to the IDF' and 'globalize the intifada' – was widely condemned.

Dora Pekec, Zohran's press secretary, said, her boss “believes every New Yorker should be free to enter a house of worship without intimidation, and that these sacred spaces should not be used to promote activities in violation of international law.”

The 200 protesters who reportedly shouted calls for violence against Jews, including a slogan that evoked Nazi beliefs, picketed an event organized by Nefesh B’Nefesh, encouraging Jews to move to Israel. Chanting "GLOBALIZE THE INTEFADA" puts chills up and down my back, reminding many of the Nazis.  That's what they had done without any Muslims involved, or wasn't there? 

Mark Goldfeder, CEO of the National Jewish Advocacy Center, responded to Mamdani, writing that “you are already failing on your commitment to protect all New Yorkers.”   

“An event to celebrate aliyah is not a violation of international law,” he said. “It is a protected First Amendment right, and what happened last night was a disgraceful violation of the FACE Act.” (The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act of 1994 bars injuring, intimidating or interfering with people’s exercise of their right to religious worship.) 

 Our return to Israel is a commandment in the bible that very few Americans have followed, up to now.  (I made aliyah in 1980 but returned to the USA during Thanksgiving 1985) They didn't have such things as Nefesh B' Nefesh then. Nefesh B’Nefesh is a non-profit organization that facilitates and encourages Jewish immigration, or aliyah, to Israel, and provides pre- and post-aliyah support. They offer resources for navigating the bureaucratic process, connecting new immigrants to employment opportunities, and integrating into Israeli life. The organization also runs programs for Lone Soldiers and works on projects for workforce development and educational initiatatives.   They sponsor students staying in Israel for 4 months for the experience. 

 For instance, over 4,430 North Americans moved to Israel between October 7, 2023, and July 4, 2025. Between 7.3 to 7.5 million Jews lived in the USA by 2022.   In the full year of 2023, 3,020 individuals from North America made aliyah, with numbers showing significant increases in 2021 and a recent surge following the October 7th attack due to factors like increased antisemitism and a desire to support                               Israel. 

Some of the tribe of Manasseh made it to Israel several years ago.  The Bnei Menashe are estimated by Shavei Israel to number around 10,000; close to 3,000 have emigrated to Israel. In the early 21st century, Israel halted immigration by Bnei Menashe; it resumed after a change in government. The chief rabbi of Israel ruled in 2005 that the Bnei Menashe was recognized as part of a lost tribe, allowing aliyah after formal conversion. Yee gads, they were kidnapped by the Assyrians before the word "Jew" developed.  We were all Israelites then.  We are called Jews for the last of the 12 states;  Judea or Judah.  But they passed the rabbinical test;  probably better Jews than we Jews are today.        You can say that this is a part of the ingathering as prophesized in the Bible of the Jewish people from all corners of the earth.  You may not   know, but the latest are Jews of the tribe of Manasseh that have been living in India, part of the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel. They were just  flownover to Israel, 6,000 Jews unconnected to us for the past 2,000 years.  

This probably is just a taste of what Mamdani has in store for a minoritygroup like the Jewish people of New York. What he says affects all theanti-Semites and they act out.

Going Against Portugal, He Saved Thousands Of Jews

Aristides de Sousa Mendes, in a 1940 photograph, knew his actions could cost him his career; But, he said, "I can only act as a Christian, as my conscience tells me.  

On May 10, 1940, Hitler launched his invasion of France and the Low Countries.  Within weeks, millions of civilians were driven from their homes trying to stay ahead of the advancing German army.  It turMesndes's city was already packed with refugees from the war zones from the Paris region, Belgium and France of 6 million and 10 million in all, coming in private cars, auto trucks, bicycles and on foot.  Dog owners killed their pets so they would not have to feed them. 

Aristides de Sousa Mendes  (European Portuguese pronunciation: ; July 19, 1885 – April 3, 1954) was a Portuguese diplomat who is recognized in Portugal as a national hero for his actions during World War II. In 1938, he was assigned to the post of Consul-General of Bordeaux, France, with jurisdiction over the whole of southwestern France.

As the Portuguese consul-general in the French city of Bordeaux, he defied the orders of António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo regime, issuing visas to thousands of refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied France, including Jews. 


                          

António de Oliveira Salazar (born April 28, 1889, Vimieiro, Port.—died July 27, 1970, Lisbon) was a Portuguese economist, who served as prime minister of Portugal for 36 years (1932–68).  He was 51 years old by 1940.            

Unknown to others, Portugal's austere dictator, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, had issues a missive, Circular 14, forbidding his diplomats from offering visas to most refugees,---especially Jews, ethnic Russians and anybody else whom the conflict rendered as a "stateless person." He maintained that he himself was neutral which meant nothing.  He didn't want to make Hitler or Francisco Franco of Spain  mad.

He was a 54 year old man who loved his wife who gave him 14 children. Sousa Mendes married his childhood sweetheart, Maria Angelina Coelho de Sousa Mendes (born August 20, 1888), who was also his cousin. They eventually had fourteen children, born in the various countries in which he served,  and he loved his mistress who was 5 months pregnant with his 15th child when he was about to have a nervous breakdown.  

The French government fled Paris.  German soldiers raised the swastika at the Arc de Triomphe.  Mendes was in the Portuguese consulate, living upstairs.  2 blocks away were one of the largest city squares in all of Europe where refugees set up camp in cars, boxes and tents.  That's where statesmen, ambassadors and ministers, generals and other high officers, professors, men of letters, academics, famous artists, journalists, university students, Red Cross workers, members of ruling families, princes...soldiers of all ranks and posts, industrialists, businessmen, priests, nuns, women and children who all needed protection landed.  Many of them were Jews who were already persecuted and sought to escape the horror of further persecution.

Sousa Mendes was a devoted Catholic who suspected he descended from conversos, Jews who had been forced to convert during the Spanish Inquisition, was appalled by the suffering.  He invited elderly, ill and pregnant refugees to shelter in his flat and  sleep on chairs, blankets and rugs on the floor.   The offices became crowded with refugees.                                 


 Mendes rode around in a car to look at the city streets and saw the Polish rabbi, Chaim Kruger and his wife, Cilla and their 5 young children.  Mendes invited him back to the consulate.  Then Mendes declared, "No Jews may receive a visa". This was from the order of  the dictator, Salazar.

Then Mendes asked permission from Portugal to issue the visas and on June 13, 1940 it was denied.  Mendes offered Rabbi Kruger a visa anyway, and Kruger didn't take them as it made him special.  He said, "It is not just me who needs help, but all my fellow Jews who are in danger of their lives.  He went on saving Jews.  He saved thousands.  Rabbi Kruger worked with him.  

As a result of his actions, Sousa Mendes was recalled to Portugal and stood trial for defying the regime. He was punished with demotion and forced retirement. He was unable to find other employment and died in poverty in 1954, 14 years later.

For his efforts to save Jewish refugees, Sousa Mendes was recognized by Israel as one of the Righteous Among the Nations in 1966, the first diplomat to be so honored. To many, Aristides de Sousa Mendes was one of the greatest heroes of World War II. Holocaust scholar Yehuda Bauer characterized Sousa Mendes' deeds as "perhaps the largest rescue action by a single individual during the Holocaust."

Palestine and Britain's Mishandling of Mandate

After World War I, the Middle East, an Ottoman Empire possession, went to the winners of the war.  Britain was given the mandate for Palestine which was to last for 30 years.  They were to police the land and help the Jews create their Jewish Homeland, as Palestine was to go to the Jews.  Jews  had lost their land, Judea and Israel to the Romans in 70 CE  and had been homeless for 2,000 years.  They had been suffering from anti-Semitism wherever they went, so this had been legally arranged.

The Brits, in order to carry out this mandate, chose High Commissioners to govern Palestine.  They were Chief executive officials.  The first man to be appointed was a Jew, Sir Herbert Samuel (1870-1963) whose time ran from 1920 to 1925.  This appointment evoked great hopes among the Jews, especially as he was known to be a supporter of Zionism.  Samuels was the first Jew to be a member of a British cabinet and did so by 1909.  He had held office in the Liberal government from 1905 to 1916.  After being a High Commisioner in Palestine, he was in the national government from 1931 to 1932.  His memorandum to the Cabinet in 1914 influenced the Balfour Declaration.  He became the leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Commons from 1931 to 1935 and in the House of Lords from 1944 to 1955.

His initial task was complicated by the delay in confirming the Mandate and by Arab violence.  He suspended Jewish immigration, the very thing he was to allow and help to happen.  Why?  Arab violence had started in 1921.  Why did they riot?
                                                                           
One of the first things Samuel did, obviously to get in tight with the Arabs who probably scared him, was to appoint Haj Mohammed Amin el-Husseini (1893-1974) as the Grand Mufi of Jerusalem and if that wasn't enough, also the head of the Supreme Moslem Council in 1921.  Husseini therefore had the title of Sherif of Jerusalem and The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.  Samuel showed Husseini much benevolence.  Was it because he came from a long standing Jerusalemite Arab family that had traced their genealogy back to the grandson of Mohammad?    Why did he do this when he knew that in 30 years it was all to become a Jewish state?

Husseini was in direct opposition and competition with Emir Feisal, who was THE spokesman for all the Arabs.  He was for the Jews' return and had high hopes that they would be able to improve his people just by living there and showing them more modern ideas and ways.

Feisal had had meetings with Chaim Weizmann (1874 Belarus-1952 Israel).  Chaim had helped the English to win the war with his invention that made ammunition far better than the enemy had, and so was being rewarded for this by being heard.  It was all agreed upon.  All except the stone in the mix; Husseini,  who didn't want to give up his position as a very important man in Jerusalem and was afraid this would happen once more Jews moved there  and become a Jewish city once again.  He instigated riots in 1921.

This may have brought about the White Paper in June 1922. which followed a statement by Winston Churchill who was the present day secretary for the colonies.  It stated that the aim of the Balfour Declaration was to establish a Jewish National Home, but not Jewish domination.  He said that the Jews were there by right and not on sufferance.  It also made Jewish immigration into Palestine dependent on absorptive  capacity.  As a direct result of the White Paper, Transjordan was affected.   It detached Transjordan from Palestine and came as a large disappointment to the Jews.  The Balfour Declaration had included the area of  Transjordan.

The Balfour Declaration was part of the legal complexities that Jews had been wading through in order to be able to go back to their original land of Israel and Judea legally.  It was an official statement issued on November 2, 1917 at the end of World War I by the British secretary, Arthur James BALFOUR.  It had declared that the British government favored the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people and would use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that NOTHING shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country (thinking of the Jews of England who would not like to be rooted up from their homes and shipped off to this home.) such as Samuel.  Actually, this was setting up an unrealistic but idealistic Garden of Eden where Arabs would step aside for returning Jews.

This Declaration came about after LONG negotiations initiated by Chaim Weizmann, Nahum Sokolow and others shortly after the outbreak of World War I, with the support of Herbert Samuel, Chief Rabbi J.H. Hertz, the Haham Moses Gaster, and others.  There was much discussion on the formula of the Declaration and its timing.  Balfour visited the USA in Spring of 1917 and met with President Wilson who supported the efforts of the American Zionists who were headed by Louis Brandeis which expedited the final decision of the British government.

We had Jews at that time who were afraid of it happening and were against the idea.  They were the presidents of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and of the Anglo-Jewish Association.  DL Alexander and CG Montefiore issued a statement that the Zionist aspirations were calculated to endanger the Jewish position in all countries.  All countries meant the Western of USA and England, evidently, for pogroms and anti-Semitism were going great in France and Russia.  All this rebuttal made Britain even more cautious, so they didn't accept the wording from the Zionists that said:
1. To recognize Palestine as "the national home of the Jewish people"
2. For providing a "Jewish National Colonizing Corporation" for the resettlement and economic development of the country.

The Declaration, after having finally been approved by the British cabinet, was sent to Lord Walter Rothchild who was asked to convey it to the Zionist Federation.  It was approved by other Allied governments and incorporated in the Mandate in 1922.

Samuel did a few helpful things such as erecting the structure of the new Palestine, creating a solid governmental machinery and turning a chaotic country into an organized state, good for England but not for the future of the Jews.  The foundations of the Jewish National Home were  firmly laid down during his term of office.

Lord Plumer was the 2nd High Commissioner from 1925 to 1928.  He, on the other hand, refused to restrict Jewish immigration and displayed much administrative energy.  Under his rule, Palestine citizenship provisos were laid down.  A water supply for Jerusalem was installed.  Public works schemes were inaugurated to meet the threat of unemployment.

Sir John Chancellor was the 3rd High Commissioner from 1928 to 1931.  1929 was a year of much rioting and deaths of Jews, instigated again by the Grand Mufti.  Chancellor condemned the 1929 Arab massacres in outspoken terms.  They had happened when he was away on leave, but later was inclined to temporize.

Sir Arthur Wauchope was the 4th High Commissioner from 1931 to 1937.  He was sympathetic to Jewish aspirations while being scrupulously fair to the Arabs.   I note that Nazis were gaining power in Germany at this time, and by 1937, things were terrible for Jews living there.  They were trying to emigrate from Germany and many wanted to come to Palestine and found it difficult to get in there or to the USA.  During Wauchope's period of office, the stream of immigrants rapidly increased, naturally.

This led to Arab restiveness which he tried to pacify by promising a Legislative Council.  He failed to quell the Arab revolt of 1936, again led by the Grand Mufti and this led to the end of his position.  In 1936, Husseini was chairman of the Arab Supreme Council so  had organized the Palestine disturbances for which he was sentenced to exile in 1937.  He fled to Lebanon.

Sir Harold MacMichael (1882-1969)  was the 5th High Commissioner from 1938 to 1944. He was 56 when he took the post.  These were the war years.  He was the man in office during the war who refused to admit Jewish refugees from Europe.  This made him very unpopular with the Jewish population.  He was blamed for sending at least 768 Jewish refugees aboard MV Struma to their deaths. It was an "illegal" immigrant ship which left Romania in 1941 for Palestine and reached Istanbul, Turkey but were turned back.  It was MacMichael who had refused them entry into Palestine. The boat floundered in the Black Sea with the loss of all on board.  Seven unsuccessful attempts, mainly by Lehi (Stern Gang/Stern Group) , were undertaken to assassinate him during his sojourn in Palestine. In the last, both he and his wife narrowly escaped death in an ambush Lehi mounted on 8 August 1944 on the eve of his replacement as High Commissioner.

Viscount Gort was the 6th High Commissioner from 1944 to 1945.  He was sympathetic for the Jews, but was unable to make a fundamental change in the British government's policy.

Sir Alan Cunningham was the 7th and last High Commissioner from 1945 to 1948.  On May 14, he and his soldiers left.  He governed the country throughout the eventful happenings which culminated in the British withdrawal from Palestine.  By 1946, the population of Jerusalem reached 165,000 of whom 100,000 were Jews.  The city expanded and the Hebrew University was erected on Mt. Scopus.  This was a period of Jewish resistance to the  British Mandatory government.  The UN partition resolution of November 29, 1947 provided for the creation of an independent area of Jerusalem under the UN administration.  Arab outbreaks which were exactly like warfare were between the Haganah and the Arabs who had developed into the Arab Legion of Transjordan  seemed to put an end to this international scheme.  During that time, the Jewish quarter in the Old City had to be evacuated and was destroyed.  The rest of Jerusalem fell into Jewish hands.  The Arab Legion was shelling and starving the Jews in trying to get them  to surrender, but that was foiled by the fortitude of the Jews and by the opening of the Burma Road which restored the connection between Jewish Jerusalem and the coast.

Husseini, the Grand Mufti,  participated in Rashid Ali's pro-Axis coup in Iraq during World War II before he went to Europe, where he assisted Hitler and was largely responsible for the liquidation of the Jews in the Moslem areas of Bosnia.  In 1946 he escaped to Egypt.  Now we see Gaza was also affected by him.  After 1948, he set up a Palestine Government in Gaza, but it was short-lived.  Later, he set one up in Cairo, Egypt.  All this power was given to him by Samuel.  Evidently Samuel didn't vet him.
