Calling The Shots; Trump About Israel's Dealing With Iraq

 Nadene Goldfoot

Tom Barrack, soon to be 79 years old, US Ambassador (messenger or representative) to Turkey

USA  has warned Iraq that Israel will strike militias that seek to aid Hezbollah !

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad  Shia al Sudani meeting Barrack in Baghdad, Iraq on November 30, 2025.

Envoy and lawyer Tom Barrack meets newly reelected PM in Baghdad, reportedly tells him to crack down on Iran-backed groups and stay out of regional conflicts.

First, who is this envoy?  Barrack's grandparents were Lebanese Christians who immigrated in 1900 to the United States from Zahlé. Barrack was raised in Culver City, California, where his father was a grocer and his mother was a secretary.  Thomas Joseph Barrack Jr. (born April 28, 1947) is an American private equity real estate investor and the founder and retired chairman of Colony Capital, a publicly traded real estate investment trust.  Of course, in the real estate business like Trump.

Barrack has for decades been a close friend of and fundraiser for U.S. President Donald Trump, representing him in television news appearances. He was senior advisor to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and served as the chairman of his Inaugural Committee. In Trump's second administration, Barrack serves as the United States Ambassador to Turkey, an enemy of Israel.

On July 21, Barrack spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention. In September 2016, Barrack helped set up a meeting between Trump and the Emir of Qatar in Trump Tower, although, as Kilpatrick noted, none of the investments brought in from the gulf by Barrack's firm in the two years following that meeting came from Qatar. After Trump became president, Barrack continued to act as a middleman between him and Arab princes.

  • Iraqi Position: The Iraqi government under Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani has stated it will not be drawn into any conflict between Israel and Iran and will not allow its territory or airspace to be used for attacks against other nations. However, the government struggles to control all Iran-backed armed groups within its bordersIraq became immersed with Hezbollah primarily after the 2003 U.S. invasion, when Iran tasked Hezbollah with training and equipping Iraqi Shiite militias to fight U.S. forces, leading to the formation of elite units like Hezbollah Unit 3800 and the creation of groups like Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH). Hezbollah provided crucial combat expertise, sophisticated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and tactical skills, deepening Iran's regional influence through these Iraqi proxies and creating a new network to counter American presence in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein, President/Dictator of Iraq (1937-2006)
was the President of Iraq from 1979 to 2003, leading Iraq in the devastating Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) against Iran, which he invaded. He rose to power in Iraq and ruled as a dictator before being overthrown by the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
  • The United States' 2003 invasion of Iraq was officially justified by the George W. Bush administration on the grounds of disarming Iraq of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), ending Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and promoting democracy in the region. These rationales have been the subject of significant debate and scrutiny since the invasion, as no WMD stockpiles were found after the war. If you forgotSaddam Hussein was the President of Iraq from 1979 until he was overthrown in the U.S.-led invasion in 2003; he was captured hiding within Iraq in December 2003 and later executed in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2006.
  • Regional Conflict: Iraq remains a flashpoint in the wider conflict between Israel and Iran. Iran-backed militias operating within Iraq have previously launched attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets and continue to pose a threat to Israel's security, leading the Israeli army to remain on high alert.
  • Iraq and Israel currently have no formal diplomatic relations and remain in a state of hostility, with ongoing regional tensions largely driven by Iran's influence in Iraq and the broader Middle Eastern crisis.

  • Hezbollah is currently led by Naim Qassem, who became Secretary-General in October 2024 after the death of Hassan Nasrallah, with the Shura Council electing him to oversee the group's military and political wings, continuing its established policies. Naim Qassem, a veteran cleric and former deputy, took over leadership after Hassan Nasrallah was killed by an Israeli airstrike in September 2024.

Rafa Crossing's Usefulness and Headache For All

 Nadene Goldfoot

The Israeli military released photos showing tanks and armoured vehicles at the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing

The Rafah Crossing is the sole border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and has been a critical focal point for humanitarian aid and the movement of people during the ongoing conflict. The crossing's status is highly sensitive and subject to complex political and security dynamics involving Israel, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, and Hamas terrorism.

Israel is under immense pressure, from the U.S. and Arab countries, to reopen the Rafah crossing to allow around 65,000 Gazans who fled during the war to return.

Rafa Crossing is a the bottom left corner, a crossing into Egypt from Gaza.  As of early January 2026, the status of the Rafah Crossing remains uncertain and contentious.

Israeli Control: Israeli forces seized control of the Palestinian side of the crossing in May 2024 and maintained an operational presence there, effectively closing it to regular traffic.

  • Recent Announcements & Closures: Israel announced in early December 2025 that it intended to reopen the crossing for Palestinians wishing to leave Gaza, reportedly due to pressure from the U.S.. However, shortly after this announcement, Israel closed the crossing again indefinitely in mid-October 2025, citing delays in Hamas returning the remains of hostages.
  • Egyptian Position: Egypt has insisted the crossing should be operated by Palestinian authorities and the EU mission, and has rejected Israeli proposals to coordinate its reopening under a "one-way traffic" plan (only allowing people to exit Gaza). Egypt is committed to allowing movement in both directions.
  • Egypt, meanwhile, says it wants the crossing immediately opened in both directions, so Palestinians in Egypt can enter Gaza. That’s a position rooted in "Egypt’s vehement opposition to Palestinian refugees permanently resettling in the country."  Egypt is overpopulated as it is.

  • Humanitarian Impact: The closures have severely impacted the flow of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of thousands of sick and wounded Palestinians needing medical care outside of Gaza. Aid organizations state that the volume of aid entering is a fraction of what is needed to address the severe crisis and famine conditions in Gaza.

Saudi news outlet Al-Sharq reported Sunday that Egypt informed the Palestinian Authority (PA) that Israel would soon approve the reopening of Rafah in both directions.

As I see it, on October 7, 2023's invasion into Israel of the maddened crazy Hamas killers, acting as wildmen on drugs out for blood has curdled the feelings of Israelis left alive and all that has affected their thoughts about Rafah Crossing.  As of January 2026, the Israeli government officially denies that the PA is in control and maintains that any internal management by non-Hamas Gazans is vetted and supervised by the IDF and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

There is no trust for PA after that shock.  One hostage hasyet to be returned and must do so to move things forward to thenext stage.  Israel expecting this to be followed to the T is nothing compared to the brutality seen in the death of their families.

Palestinians pour into Egypt after militants blow hole in border barrier

Supposedly, When Palestinians cross into Egypt via the Rafah border, their activities are generally centered on seeking safety, medical care, education, or family reunification. The crossing is often the only exit from Gaza not controlled by Israel, and the process is usually arduous and expensive, involving significant wait times and permits.

Yes, Egypt has its own border control procedures and screens everyone entering its territory from the Rafah Crossing. The Rafah Crossing is currently closed but is expected to reopen soon, with new operational procedures involving both Egyptian and international monitoring forces.

Palestinians paying to exit Gaza is not a new phenomenon. In recent years, as Israel and Egypt have imposed strict border controls to contain Hamas' rule in Gaza, the Hala travel company offered regular border fee services on Egypt's border.

Israel and Paraguays Relations

 Nadene Goldfoot

The little pea-green state in the middle is Paraguay

Paraguay-Israel relations are strong and consistently pro-Israel, marked by shared values, support in international forums, and a recent re-establishment of Paraguay's embassy in Jerusalem in late 2024, reversing a temporary move to Herzliya. This strong bond, rooted in religious conservatism, historical support for Israel's creation (1947 UN vote), and shared resilience, sees Paraguay designating Hamas as a terrorist group, backing Israel after the October 7 attacks, and strengthening cooperation in tech, agriculture, and security, making it a key ally in South America.

Paraguay President Pena with Benjamin Netanyahu, PM of Israel

What do we know about Paraguay?  The leaders are young.

Paraguay, a landlocked South American nation, is roughly the sze of California (around 157,000 sq mi/406,000 sq km) wit a growing population estimated around 7-7.6 million (2025), known for its strong indigenous Guaraní culture, dual Spanish/Guaraní language use, and being an "Upper-middle-income" country with a significant urban population. Paraguay's people are predominantly Mestizo, speaking Spanish and Guarani, with a strong Catholic majority (around 70-90%), balanced with growing Evangelical Protestantism and smaller groups like Mennonites, Jews, and Muslims, all under a constitution guaranteeing religious freedom. This South American nation blends indigenous Guarani culture with Spanish colonial history, creating a unique national identity reflected in its faith and people.

President:
Santiago Peña

Compare that to Israel today:  Israel is a fast growing country in the Middle East with a population of approximately 10.15 million people-far more than recent 7 million,  and a total area of about 22,072 square kilometers (8,522 sq miles).

  • Religious Affiliation (2023 est.):
    • 73.7% Judaism
    • 18.3% Islam                                                             VP: Pedro Alliana
    • 1.9% Christianity
    • 1.6% Druze faith
  • Ethnic Groups (2025 est.):
    • 71.9% Jews
    • 21% Arabs
    • 7.1% Others (including non-Arab Christians, Baha'i, etc.)
  • 1. Paraguay moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, then briefly back to Herzliya, before President Santiago Peña restored it to Jerusalem in December 2024, signaling renewed commitment
  • 2. Paraguay consistently supports Israel at the UN and other bodies, opposing anti-Israel resolutions.
  • 3. It officially designated Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as terrorist organizations.
  • 4. The relationship is built on shared democratic values, resilience, and a historical connection, including welcoming Jewish immigrants.
  • Post-October 7th Stance: Paraguay was a staunch supporter after the 2023 Hamas attacks, with President Peña stating, "We will not abandon Israel," according to Latin America Reports and The Jerusalem Post.
  • Cooperation: The partnership extends beyond politics into technology, agriculture, and security, benefiting both nations.
  • Historical Roots: Paraguay voted for the 1947 UN Partition Plan for Palestine and opened diplomatic relations in 1949, maintaining strong historical ties.
