Deni Avdija of Basketball Fame in Israel and Now With Portland Trailblazers

 Nadene Goldfoot

"Deni Avdija, rising Portland Trail Blazers star born in Israel and the athlete who lit the torch at the 2023 JCC Maccabi Games in Israel, has an opportunity to make history as the first Israeli ever selected to the NBA All-Star team. His role in opening the Games symbolized Jewish pride, leadership, and the power of sport to unite communities around the world, and now fans can help carry that spirit onto the All-Star court.

I am one of them.  Being a dual-citizen of USA/Israel, I just heard about him on December 8th of 2025 and wrote about him, not knowing much about the Sports World or watching any of it.  But to find an Israeli playing in my home town of Portland caught my eye.

Last night my caretaker, Keliq Washington, changed my mind and got the Trail Blazer game on for me, knowing I would be excited over an Israeli top player.  I saw how the camera followed him continuously during the game.   I stayed up an hour later to finish the game, enraptured with it and saw to my dismay how Deni went down and out in the last quarter of the last few minutes injured in the same area I fatefully have been injured, the lumbar area of the back, I believe from seeing him leave the floor.

Now I'm a Trail Blazer fan and will be watching for #8 all the time.  This is my 3rd article I've written about this young man.

My deepest hope is that he will be all right and be able to play in the next game on Thursday, January 15th at 7pm.  I hope he goes and checks it out with an MRI or at least X ray first.
