America and Russia: Motivation for the Return of Jews to Palestine

Nadene Goldfoot
After 2,000 years of exile, what drove us Jews to Palestine?
American Revolution

Why America?  Why did this country induce a return of Jews after 2,000 years to return to their origins, the land of Canaan now called Palestine?  Let me explain.

Before 1776, America's birthday, all nations were ruled by kings and queens.

That was the point of the little band of Pilgrims who rode the ship, Mayflower in 1620, over uncharted seas to land by accident in North America's soon to become Massachusetts.  They had come from England via Holland escaping England's politics that were against their religion.  From this brave and intelligent band, we see the spread of Democracy a century later.

Jews benefited greatly, having been the scapegoat of the world since the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE and even before by the Roman rulers.  Nowhere in the world were Jews ever given the same rights as other people.  In the United States they were given equal rights and that spread to most countries of Western and Central Europe as well.  When something great happens, it's hard to contain.

But in Russia....Oh no.  Being so far north, they were slow to catch on to modernity.  Czars hated the ideals of democracy.  The Jews had their largest population stuck in Russia!  They were treated with "dreadful cruelty."

Nicholas I, Czar of Russia, who reigned from 1825 to 1855, had Jewish boys between 8 and 12 taken from their homes and put in the Russian army for 30 years or more if they could live through such an experience.  They were stationed far from their own homes and often starved and beaten. treated as low-life.  Those who survived were often forced to convert to Christianity.  Mothers would wound their own sons if they had the stomach for it to keep their sons at home.  They were getting desperate.

In 1855, Alexander II came to the throne and with him, progress.  He gave more freedom to all Russian people.  He even helped the Jews by ending the drafting of Jewish children.  He allowed Jews into public high schools and universities.

Alas, in 1881 there were Russian revolutionaries abounding who set off a bomb under Alexander II's coach.  He was killed.

His son, Alexander III, took revenge.  He canceled most rights his father had granted.  Then he turned his anger on the Jews even though the killers were not Jews!  It didn't matter to him.  He passed laws forcing Jews out of their homes and schools and made it almost impossible for Jews to find work and make a living.

If that wasn't bad enough, he then caused riots against the Jews.  His own government gave permission to the Christians to attack, loot and destroy Jewish communities!  These riots were called pogroms, from the Russian word for "devastation."
Home at last by Moshe Maimon. The house's occupants return when it is safe, to find the house thoroughly looted. A rabbi is saying Kaddish for a member of the household who was killed.

A leading Czarist official stated their program for Jews thusly:

1.  Drive a third out.
2. Convert a third to Christianity.
3. Starve a third.

Few converted as we are a stiff-necked people as the bible states and that's why we were chosen..a people who would stick to the program that we were given by Moses.  The whole scene that our people went through in getting out of Egypt would cause even people of today to follow what Moses taught. It was earth shattering including earthquakes.  Surely our people must have experienced something like PTSD to have undergone 40 such years that they underwent--including that special manna that could have been spiked with some ultra strong  vitamins.

The Russian experience caused millions to flee Russia.  More than 2.25 million Jews, every 5 Jews in the world, got out between 1881 and 1924 when the door closed on those seeking asylum in the USA.  1881 saw the first Aliyah to Palestine, a group of Jews followed by 4 more Aliyote.

Jews were from Eastern Europe who chose the USA.  The USA  changed from a distant outpost of Judaism to a major center, like Babylonia did.  During World War I there were more Jewish soldiers in the USA army than there had been Jews in the whole country during the Civil War!   Some Eastern European Jews opted for Western Europe or  or even South Africa as had happened to our family.  One brother chose to go to the USA while others went to South Africa.  There were still others whose only goal was to live in Eretz Yisrael (the land of Israel).

We always had Jews that hadn't left and had managed to remain in Eretz Yisrael no matter who was ruling.  They were there to pray and to study the Torah and other writings such as the Talmud.  By doing this, they felt they were speeding up the coming of the Messiah.  These were holy religious Jewish people.  They lived in what we would call poverty as they had a meager existence in which Jewish children in the USA would save their pennies and donate to them.  This was our main group for charity purposes.

Draining the swamps

The new Jewish immigrants were made of tougher cloth and had a different vision.  they wanted to farm the soil of the Holy Land and make it once again a land of milk and honey. Most of Europe had not allowed any Jews to own land or to become farmers, and anti- Semitism charged that Jews were unable to do real labor.  Young Jewish pioneers were called the Halutzim, and they were determined to prove that Jews could work as well as anyone!  After all, didn't we build storage cities in Egypt for the Pharoahs?

In 1882 the first Aliyah had arrived from Russia.  The book, THE SETTLERS-by Meyer Levin, tells about this experience beautifully. They were made up of  handful of young adults, about a dozen men and one woman, who came from a Russian-Jewish organization called BILU.  The name was taken from the initials of words spoken by the prophet Isaiah,  Bet Yaakov l'chu v'naylcha.
(House of Jacob, come let us go up.)

These young halutzim were our real heroes.  They came from comfortable homes and had good educations, but they gave up all of this in order to rebuild the Jewish Homeland.  They had their ideals, but that was all, no money or knowledge about how to farm in rocks and swamps they found in Eretz Yisrael; nor how to fight mosquitoes.   Some stayed, some dropped out and sought out towns, others returned to Russia or America, but they had started something that did not end.  It was the impetus for the return back to our origins.

1907 HaShomer (the Watchmen) , our men who guarded their settlements
and kept everyone safe

The Haganah finally replaced them.

To make Israel what it is today took much courage.  We mustn't forget what our forefathers had gone through, nor our present people for what they endure to keep our Israel safe from harm and to keep our religion alive and meaningful.

Today even women must join IDF and help to guard the
state.  Our new HaShomers.

A World - Shaking Birthday on May 14, 1948

Nadene Goldfoot
Our holy city of Jerusalem,
maybe on her 1st birthday
"If only the British had treated Arabs and Jews equally, and forced the Arabs to obey the law, the two groups might have learned to live together peacefully.

If only the British had permitted Jews to enter Palestine in reasonable numbers, the English and the Zionists could have joined with the Arabs to build a great land."
                                                             OR
If only the Arabs had decided to talk to UNSCOP, they might have made some telling points.

The refugees from Europe needed homes in Palestine because they weren't allowed into Western countries.

The United States, though urging immigration into Eretz Yisrael, kept its own doors locked to the refugees.  During the first 8 months of 1946, America admitted only 4,767 refugees----barely the number on the ship, Exodus 1947.

On that ship, the British sailors boarded and took control.  They wore uniforms and white helmets.  The British troops guarded a group of refugee children in Haifa when they were alongside the Exodus.  The ship's passengers were later sent back to Germany.  When the British seized the Haganah's leaky old ships, they would search for "illegal" refugees and send them back to detention camps in Cyprus.

After World War II, Jewish survivors of Hitler's program against the Jews had nowhere to go.  There were 300,000 homeless DISPLACED PERSONS.

The democracies of the West wouldn't accept them.
Britain refused to let them into Palestine.
There was fighting between the Yishuv of Palestine and the British.
Irgun, a Jewish group of fighters, used violent tactics including blowing up British headquarters in Jerusalem.

Stern Group warned King David Hotel
they would blow it up,
but British didn't listen

My own 3rd cousin was the chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group-the toughest of them all that the Brits referred to as "The Stern Gang."
The Haganah, a very mild following the law group, confronted the British with boatloads of refugees.

Britain finally turned the problem of Palestine over to the UN.  The UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), shocked by British cruelty to the refugees on the ship, EXODUS 1947, recommended that Palestine be divided into Arab and Jewish states.  The UN accepted this recommendation on November 29, 1947.

None of these "its" happened.  As a result, battle lines had been drawn.

September 3, 1947's plan

THE PARTITION PLAN:  The UNSCOP report recommended that Palestine be divided into 2 states:  one Arab, one Jewish.  This is after the League of Nations and the United Nations had voted that Palestine become a Jewish State and that Britain was given a 30 year mandate to help keep order and to help the Jews to have their Jewish State.  Britain had failed to comply.

Zionists were disappointed because of the need to control their holy city, Jerusalem.  They felt such a decision was neither fair and indefensible.  However, they went ahead and accepted the UNSCOP recommendation.

The Arabs rejected the report entirely.

It was up to the UNITED NATIONS to decide what to do.

President Truman pledged American support of the UNSCOP Partition Plan
An Arab victory seemed certain.
Russia surprised the world by announcing that it, too, would vote in favor of dividing Palestine and creating a Jewish state.  This was a first for Russia and the USA to vote together on any issue.

The voting began on November 29, 1947.
Nations cast their vote one by one.
Most European States, many Latin American countries and members of the British Commonwealth joined the USA and Russia in voting.
All Arab states opposed it.
Great Britain did not vote.
The end result was:  33 for of dividing Palestine into one Jewish and one Arab state.  13 against.    10 did not vote.  They had the needed 2/3 majority for approval.
The UN had said the Jews could have a state in Palestine.  It was up to the Jewish leaders, the Yishuv, to make that state a reality.

British soldiers watched Arabs riot toward the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem.  They did nothing to stop the attack.  Some even shot the locks off the doors of Jewish shops to help Arabs loot and destroy.

In reply to that, the Irgun broke into an Arab movie theater, setting it on fire.
Their intention was to fight hard for their state and not let the Arabs stop them.
Arab forces attacked from every side, destroying and killing Jews.  No Jew was safe.  Arabs were controlling the roads connecting to towns.  By the end of March 1948, the country was cut apart.  Towns in the Negev couldn't communicate with the rest of the country.  Villages in the north were isolated.  Parts of Jerusalem were cut off from each other.

Chaim Weizmann 1874-1952
Israel's 1st President, had been a chemist.
Without his knowledge of organic chemistry, Britain may have
lost WWI.
Weizmann and King Feisal, of Iraq in 1921 and king of Syria;  and  oldest son of Hussein, sherif of mecca in 1922 working
together after WWI to get a home for Jews
at League of Nations
Chaim Weizmann, the chosen president for the Jews, was old, sick and half-blind, but he made a long journey from London for an audience with President Truman who wouldn't even talk to the Yishuv.  The White House said there would be no meeting.

However, and maybe this was a miracle;  Truman had had a business partner who was Jewish, Eddie Jacobson.  They had remained close friends.  Eddy admired Chaim Weizmann.  Weizmann was secretly admitted to the White House.

This was not Weizmann's first merry go round.  42 years earlier he had met with Balfour and talked him into a life-long Zionist.  When Weizmann left the president, he had received a solemn promise that the USA would support the idea of a Jewish state.

Jewish men and women coming to join Haganah

David Ben-Gurion (Gruen) b: 1886- d: 1973

Ben-Gurion at age 67 and the Haganah thought that a Jewish state might not survive.  General Yigael Yadin of Haganah thought not, too because food and supplies couldn't be driven past Arab positions on the road to Jerusalem.  The Jewish Quarter was about to starve to death.  The British were handing over key locations to the Arabs!

The Final Vote

On May 12, 1948, two days before the last British soldiers were to leave Palestine, General Yadin met with Ben-Gurion and his team.  Many key positions were now in Jewish control.  Morale was high.  But.....

Armies of 5 Arab states had massed to attack as soon as the English left.  The little Zionist army didn't have enough equipment.  They had bought some weapons in Europe but the British wouldn't allow them into Palestine for the Jews.  Could they even survive until the weapons could make it to them?

Everyone was telling the Jews not to go ahead as the danger was too high.  4 leaders voted for delay.  6 said NOW!  The future was decided by 1 vote.

On Friday, May 14, 1948, the street outside the Tel Aviv Museum was filled up with a crowd of people.  At 4:00 pm, Ben Gurion read Israel's Proclamation of Independence.

A state was being launched in the land of its birthplace of the Jewish people.  It would guarantee equality to all its citizens, and freedom of religion and culture to all.
"We extend our hand in peace and neighborliness to all the neighboring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all."

That night the Jews of Tel Aviv celebrated both a Shabbat and their independence from Britain and their birth.  No Jew in Jerusalem  had been able to hear the radio broadcast, however.  Arabs had cut off all electricity and were preparing to  attack.   I can imagine at least one or more rabbis wanting to thank those Arabs for helping them to keep Shabbat as the holiday that should take precedence.

Israel finding herself in her War of Independence
29 November 1947-with Arabs responding with violence to UN resolution on Palestine and lasted until the signing of the Armistice Agreements in 1949.

Such was Israel's 1st birthday, and now we celebrate her 72nd.

Israel Facing Illegal Kangaroo Court-Terrorists Suing Israel in War and Review of Standards of Terrorists

Nadene Goldfoot
At times, Fatah terrorists have joined with Hamas Terrorists
Against Israel, but the two groups fight
about who is the leader
I'm sure I'm living in Alice in Wonderland's planet.  This is surely an upside down world we are living in today.  I see that Hamas has the chutzpa to be taking Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for something during the constant war between the two;  War Crimes.  Terrorists who terrorize are suing the most legalistic and moral state in the world! Israel!
The sad thing is that people such as the court and others are going along with it.  Logic is not king anymore.

Dr. Ghazi Hamad born 1964
former chairman of the border crossings authority in Gaza

The plaintiff is the spokesman for the PA Executive Committee made up of 45 members.  They have taken their grievance to the ICC.  Dr. Ghazi Hamad is their spokesman, the deputy foreign minister of the terrorist group, Hamas, who have been actively warring against Israel since being given Gaza by Israel.  The committee also includes 2 other terrorist organizations;  the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF).

Faou Bom Bensouda, born 1961
ICC's chief prosecutor since June 2012
Gambian lawyer and minister of justice in Gambia,
a small state born in 1965.

The prosecutor for the ICC is a woman, Fatau Bensouda of Gambia, Africa.  She secretly colluded with the PA against
Israel according to a Jordanian newspaper. A previous investigation of silly charges of systemic human rights abuses by the British military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq showed up her conduct of bias.
No wonder that the PA's negotiator, Saeb Erekat, thinks the ICC investigation will prove to be successful in Hamas's favor.  Gambia's standards of moral conduct in war must be a lot different!!

The US State Department revoked her visa in early April 2019.  She had been investigating whether US servicemen or US officials engaged in war crimes in Afghanistan Poland, Romania and Lithuania.  The UN officials criticized the US for doing this.  Was she picking on the US all of a sudden?

Like the US, Bensouda's beef with Israel is expansive.  The ICC is ready to begin an investigation of ALLEGED war crimes by Israeli soldiers against Arab civilian citizens of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.  Bensouda said on April 30th that she would go ahead with the investigation if the pre-trial judges of ICC tell her that she is on solid ground to start the inquiry.

"Legal affairs journalist Yonah Jeremy Bob writes that Israel's   IDF conducted at least 500 probes and more than 30 full inquiries into actions taken by Israeli soldiers during the 2014 Gaza conflict. In 2015, a commission of military figures from several democratic states that reviewed the military operations by Israel in the 2014 Gaza war established that "the IDF not only met its obligations under the Law of Armed Conflict but often exceeded these on the battlefield at significant tactical cost.""

According to the court's own rules, they are breaking the rules if they go ahead.  "According to the ICC's charter, the Court cannot investigate the conduct of non-signatory states of the 1998 Rome Statute that established the Court. Israel, like the U.S., is not a signatory of the statute."  They really have a warped sense of moral law if you ask me.
Hamas to shower Israel cities with missiles!

Hamas, started in 1987,  has been the major player in the terrorist war against Israel.  They have perpetuated 40% of suicide bombings and dominates Gaza.  They use rocket and mortar attacks and are closely tied to Syria, Iran and Lebanon.  Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Western Europe, Hezbollah and others fund them. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department.  They have built a lot of tunnels with that money.  One use of them is to pop up and attack or kidnap.

The PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, started in 1967, have been major players in the 1970s and 1980s.  This and related groups are small and considered miner players today.  They have been in Judea and Samaria (West Bank), Gaza, Syria and Lebanon.  They follow Marxist/Leninist, revolutionary nationalism through armed insurrection and refuse to recognize Israel. They broke off from PLO in 1974, but have rejoined again.

Arafat and his friends, Hillary Clinton and her daughter

The PLO started in 1964 and is the representative of the Palestinian people.  They are the political party in the PA.  They are accused by the international community of extensive corruption and theft of international aid during its governance of the PA.  They were guilty of plane hijackings, hostage taking, bombings, assassinations, targeted Israeli civilians and Jews globally, and conducted operations against Lebanese, Jordanians and Americans.  They tried to overthrow King Hussein of Jordan and was crushed by Hussein's army in September of 1970.  Arafat was their well-known leader.

The Fight Against Growing Propaganda

Nadene Goldfoot

British held the mandate for 30 years, up May 14, 1948
The promise of the Jewish Homeland for Jews
Came after WWI's where Germany and Ottoman Empire lost
A fact many Jews haven't even learned about in school or synagogue

Propaganda against Israel is as insidious as it is obvious.  For those people with the inclination to believe anything bad about Israel, it's an easy thing to believe just about anything that they hear about today.  I see this in Syria, for example where Israel is used as the cause of bad weather; anything that comes along to upset a person's day.

It's the liberal Christian groups who are the ones attacking Israel the most out of all the Christian denominations.  They have world-wide campaigns working against Israel.  They are quick to attack Israel's legitimacy.  The group of Christians who back President Trump are supportive of Israel.  They are ones who study the Old Testament.  John Hagee is a Televangelist preacher
who as written the book, In Defense of Israel, copyright 1979.  He feels that the mandate for supporting the Jewish State is the Bible.  They have a group, Christians United for Israel.

BDS on college campuses in USA

The campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) has been going on for a long time,  aimed at delegitimizing the Jewish State.  Some college campuses have had student senate resolutions calling for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions and divestment from companies doing business in Israel.

The BDS movement has also moved into high school social studies curriculum.  One such way has been the "Palestine Teaching Trunk." It may have already come to a high school in any of our 50 states.  This was developed by a retired lawyer teacher under the auspices of the Seattle-based Palestine Solidarity Committee.  The group supports a boycott of all Israeli goods and reject Israel's rights to exist as a Jewish State.  I remember that Saudi Arabia also had a teaching packet before this, but certainly not as elaborate.

This convenient packet-the teaching trunk- comes with teaching plans, DVDs, maps of "disappearing Palestine," and an "occupation" game and selective readings, including articles by pro-BDS Israeli historians Simha Flapan and Ilan Pappe.  The materials are intended to present "different perspective," which is one considers Hamas, the Electronic Intifada, former USA president Jimmy CArter and anti-Zionist Israelis to represent a diversity of viewpoints.

2nd largest University in Oregon
Portland State U with over 29,000 students
This is where I graduated as an educator in 1958
after having two children.

Professor Michael Weingrad of Portland State University reviewed the materials in the PTT, and reports to us:

The history is so distorted and selective, the amount of sheer pro-Palestinian agitprop so striking...the class lessons designed to forge students' emotional connections with the  Palestinian narrative so manipulative and one-sided, that it is difficult to imagine a student exposed to this curriculum drawing any other conclusion than that Israel is a vile, criminal regime..."

Looking in on an American high school social studies class
This means that those educators who okay programs in their schools did not understand what this program was designed to do: that it was propaganda against the state of Israel.  It was a political and religious piece of ammunition against the only Jewish state in the world.  The PTT was being used in at least a few high schools in the state of Washington and probably also in other states.  Hopefully it was under the radar of the pro-Israel communities, but one can't be sure today.  What is troubling is that it won praise from the curriculum editor of RETHINKING SCHOOLS, a well-known national organization of curriculum developers.

The "Trunk" was introduced in the fall of 2013 at the annual Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice, which draw hundreds of high school instructors from Washington, Oregon and California, the WESTERN STATES.
I want to emphasize this.  Yesterday, during our coronavirus month of May 2020,  I watched a Family Feud program where the 2 family groups were to name a western state.  One named Georgia.  Another named Virginia.  The audience's #1 choice that they had named was TEXAS!  Evidently none of the people knew where the west was!  I wondered about their high school classes!  Evidently they all failed in geography.

Portland, Oregon with Mt. Hood in Background
By mid-October of 2014, the curriculum was showcased at the year's NWTSJ conference in Portland, Oregon and also at a statewide in-service training sponsored by the Washington State Council for the Social Studies.  So it had plenty of advertising.

Was anything being done to stop the pro-BDS propaganda from seeping into many other classrooms?  Was Israel's studies being presented to counter such propaganda?  We're fighting against religious anti-Semitism from both certain Christian groups and Muslims, as well as the political ones of just plain old hatred, of being used to use Jews as their scapegoats for the world's ills.  We've got to be educated as defenders in a courtroom of the rights of Israel to exist; something that was taken for granted by most in 1945.

The "trunk" is evidently still in use.  They even have  WEBSITE.  Here is what they say:  It's a 2 week unit.  Here’s how some educators have described the Trunk: “comprehensive”, “develops critical thinking”, “makes it possible for students to hear silenced Palestinian voices, along with Israeli voices”, “exposure to both sides of the conflict”, “very useful to Social Studies teachers”, “diverse, well-chosen, nuanced materials”.  This is how they sell it.

Rob Jacobs from the Israel advocacy organization StandWithUs Northwest not only sees a problem with the contents of the trunk, but, according to The Jewish Sound, also questions “why the same people who put ads highly critical of Israel on the sides of Metro buses and local billboards should be offering its teaching materials in our schools.”

One thing that angers me is the part about "to hear silenced Palestinian voices."  What I heard in Israel in my over 5 years of living there (1980-1985) was never a silenced voice from the Palestinians.  Everyone spoke out about  whatever was on their minds.  If anyone is silenced, it's the Arabs themselves by their own leadership.  If they live in Gaza, they are under Hamas rule, and their aim is to destroy Israel.  Those that are brainwashed would go along with whatever their leaders say.  The over 20% of the population are Arabs, and they know they would rather live in Israel than any other neighboring Arab state.  As I see it, this in itself is propaganda against Israel.

Your child is sitting in his High School classroom, the instructor explains that this week they will be focusing on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Soon your child will be told that most Jews are not indigenous to the Middle East, that Zionism is a movement of ethnic cleansing and that anti-Semitism has nothing to do with Jews.

Far fetched?  Linda Bevis, Ed Mast and their cohorts at the BDS supporting Seattle Palestine Information Project are trying to peddle just that to Puget Sound schools with an anti-Israel curriculum they call the Palestine Teaching Trunk (PTT).

Linda Bevis  (1949-2015)
was the creator of the Palestinian Trunk.  She was an educator who says that she had first used the Holocaust Teaching Trunk and thought there should be one for the Palestinians.  She has a
JD and a Master’s in Education from the University of Washington "For Bevis, bringing a more nuanced view of Palestine is personal. Her family moved to Lebanon when she was four for her father’s position at AUB, and she calls Beirut the “first home I remember.” Even as a child, the injustices visited upon the Palestinians, particularly those living in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps Bevis passed on her way to the airport, were striking to her." I can see that living in Lebanon gave her a one-sided approach to understanding her surroundings and that is what she is projecting.
Bevis was co-founder of the Palestine Information Project and the Seattle Palestine Solidarity Committee, sister organizations that produce propaganda declaring that “the racism and colonialism of the Zionist movement, with its quest for an ethnic supremacist state, remain the fundamental causes of the current conflict.”

As recently reported, the Palestine Solidarity Committee also advocates for the boycott of Israeli made products and of companies doing business with Israel.
Ariel Sharon in 1982 with Israeli soldiers
in Beirut in First Lebanon War

"The Sabra and Shatila massacre was the killing of between 460 and 3,500 civilians, mostly Palestinians and Lebanese Shiite fighters, by a militia close to the Kataeb Party, a predominantly Christian Lebanese right-wing party, in the Sabra neighborhood and the adjacent Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon."  This might be Major Hadad of the Christian Lebanese who went in at his insistence in 1982, instead of Defense Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel.  There is lots of information about this attack as this had caused Israel to have their military there under much attacking by the PLO.   The PLO had been attacking Israel constantly and Israel had had enough.  Sharon agreed to let Hadad go in as they also had had enough of the PLO.  The result turned out to be more of a massacre.
Hadad had been Israel's friend in that he and his group were patrolling the border between Israel and Lebanon and did not go along with the PLO.  When Hadad needed to, he would come to Israel for his R and R time.
It was a terrible event, but had 2 sides to understand, and chances are that this wasn't brought up in the packet which was checked out by Weingrad.  Did it ever explore the fact that if the PLO terrorists, for that's what they were, hadn't been attacking Israel beyond all comprehension that it wouldn't have happened in the first place?  I know that Hadad was not liked by all Lebanese.  He has his own history.  He was a friend of Israel, however.

Israel fights back to defend their population.  She's a country who was promised land that had shriveled down to having 20% of what was promised and then having to have a large section of that go to Palestinians who were enemies only intent on destroying them no matter what.  Gaza and the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) and what % is left of the 20%?  Israel waited for almost 2,000 years to regain land only to see it being given away, even after they had received it.

"Israel's own Kahan commission found that only "indirect" responsibility befitted Israel's involvement.""The Kahan Commission concluded Israeli Defense minister Ariel Sharon bears personal responsibility "for ignoring the danger of bloodshed and revenge" and "not taking appropriate measures to prevent bloodshed". Sharon's negligence in protecting the civilian population of Beirut, which had come under Israeli control, amounted to a non-fulfillment of a duty with which the Defense Minister was charged, and it was recommended that Sharon be dismissed as Defense Minister."

Shahab missiles being tested in Iran

Israel has to be ahead of all the technical changes in ammunition against her.  She also has to be aware of all the propaganda that is coming out in the world against her that is just as deadly as the missiles, rockets and mortars that have bombarded her these past 72 years.  None of it will disway her in returning to her homeland, for as Golda Meir said, "we have nowhere else to go."

Israel is not perfect, but she sure is trying to be perfect and needs to be with all eyes her all the time, ready to tear her apart.
