Annexation By USA and Israel- Necessary Moves

Nadene Goldfoot

The USA has used annexation many times for good reasons.  Texas is as good an example as any.  Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845 and became the 28th state. Until 1836, Texas had been part of Mexico, but in that year a group of settlers from the United States who lived in Mexican Texas declared independence. ...

The annexation of Texas contributed to the coming of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).  And who had been the ruler in Mexico at one time?  Wasn't he a Frenchman?  Good Grief!

Yes, later In 1862, French Emperor Napoleon III maneuvered to establish a French client state in Mexico, and eventually installed Maximilian of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria, as Emperor of Mexico.

United States territory can include occupied territory, which is a geographic area that claims sovereignty, but is being forcibly subjugated to the authority of the United States of America. United States territory can also include disputed territory, which is a geographic area claimed by the United States of America and one (or more) rival governments.

In the United States, all local governments are considered "creatures of the state" according to Dillon's Rule, which resulted from the work of John Forrest Dillon on the law of municipal corporations. Dillon's Rule implies, among other things, that the boundaries of any jurisdiction falling under state government can be modified by state government action.

For this reason, examples of municipal annexation are distinct from annexations involving sovereign states.

Under the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, United States territory can include areas occupied by and controlled by the United States Armed Forces. When de facto military control is maintained and exercised, occupation (and thus possession) extends to that territory. Military personnel in control of the territory have a responsibility to provide for the basic needs of individuals under their control (which includes food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, law maintenance, and social order). To prevent systematic abuse of puppet governments by the occupation forces, they must enforce laws that were in place in the territory prior to the occupation.

Europe went through many wars.  My grandmother's home town in Lithuania was Lazdijai, sitting on the border with Poland.  After her birth in 1884, it was taken over by Poland.  Was that an annexation or just a take-over?

Jews were promised a Jewish Homeland by the League of Nations and the United Nations, yet they witnessed the loss of 80% of their promised land being given to a Saudi Prince Abdullah who was a prince without a country to rule, and could be an excellent trader with England.  Israel was left with 20% and then witnessed Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem being given to the Palestinian Arabs at the last minute.  The Jewish Homeland was cut apart again in the oddest of shapes ever!  Some cities only a few miles from Jerusalem are not in the right zone to be a part of the 8,000 sq miles Jews were left with.  It's a crazy situation but the state has just celebrated their 73rd birthday.

Yet is this move to annex so very different from Israel's position?  Judea and Samaria were divided into sectors A, B, and C with Israel law over B and C, and A was left for the Arabs.  Arabs have been creeping into the large area C and building illegally.  Evidently A has been left which may become the Arab Palestine-an area they claim will be devoid of all Jews.  This position has rule of B and C to come from the IDF, not a municipal force.  That's one of the problems.

The process of annexation need not be subversive.  Israel probably should have annexed territory that had been part of their ancient history going back 3,000 years and more, when they had the right to do so at the end of the Six Day War when they were attacked by many countries and came out of it as the winner, surprising all!  (A problem existing is that the UN, with influence like Jack Falk, refuse to accept Israel's existence in the first place, so never accept an annexation by Israel such as the Golan Heights, as much needed for defense and which benefited the population very much.)

Now they have the green light to go ahead with the USA government in agreement of such a move.  Israel has annexed earlier such places as the  without much ado.  Today, after 53 years, those with jealous hearts  are up in arms about it like the UN, EU, etc.

Those living in these places would rather be Israeli citizens.  Will Israel take the step?  Netanyahu has been promising that he would.  If he does, he will show himself to be a very brave person to buck all the negativity floating around.
He's got himself in a quandary being he is sitting as one of two Prime Ministers these days, so it isn't dependent on him alone but the whole Knesset situation.

In 1980–81 Israel annexed East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights

As a geopolitical region, the Golan Heights is the area captured from Syria and occupied by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War, territory which has been administered as part of Israel since 1981. This region includes the western two-thirds of the geological Golan Heights and the Israeli-occupied part of Mount Hermon.

Arabs in the Golan had been constantly shelling Israel from above, and the attack in 1967 by the Arab nations turned out that Israel won, and in doing so Israel actually gained territory back that had been given away by the British in their 80% of the Jewish Homeland package to Abdullah.

Neither Israel's annexation nor Palestine's claim over East Jerusalem has been internationally recognized. This is no surprise as the UN has been attacking only Israel unjustly and ignoring all other matters and countries, no matter what they have been doing.  (I don't mean to sound like a rotten kid, but this has actually been the situation.  Just read what the USA Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, has witnessed.)

East Jerusalem,
not like Portland with trees in all neighborhoods

East Jerusalem is the sector of Jerusalem that was occupied by Jordan during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, as opposed to the western sector of the city, West Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel

Jerusalem is now a unified city, no longer divided.
The Jerusalem City Council was established in 1863 during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. From 1948 to 1967 two municipalities operated in the city: an Israeli municipality provided services to the western neighborhoods of the city and a Jordanian municipality to its eastern parts.
By 1840, the Jewish community constituted the largest single religious group in the city. From the 1880s onward, the Jews constituted the majority within the city. However, it was only in 1937, under the British Mandate, that the first Jewish mayor was appointed. Since 1948 every mayor has been Jewish.
Moshe Lion has been the present mayor since 2018.

The Golan Heights was annexed with the Golan Heights Law.  On March 25, 2019, the United States finally recognized the Golan Heights as sovereign Israeli territory while the UN reaffirmed that the "..status of Golan has not changed".

While the Israeli public at large, and especially the law's critics, viewed it as an annexation, the law avoids the use of the word. Prime Minister Menachem Begin responded to Amnon Rubinstein's criticism by saying, "You use the word 'annexation.' I do not use it," and noting that similar wording was used in a 1967 law authorizing the government to apply Israeli law to any part of the Land of Israel

Update:  https://www.thenational.ae/world/europe/eu-conference-looks-to-boost-opposition-to-israel-s-annexation-of-palestinian-land-1.1027913
The eu is on the wrong side of the issue again--still.
the land belongs to the israeli's period. and the best thing for the palestinians is to let israel have it and tend it and care for it as they have never done anyway and benefit by israel's right claim and right use of that land.
Shame shame again on the eu for standing directly in the way of real peace-real solutions!

Israel Facing Illegal Kangaroo Court-Terrorists Suing Israel in War and Review of Standards of Terrorists

Nadene Goldfoot
At times, Fatah terrorists have joined with Hamas Terrorists
Against Israel, but the two groups fight
about who is the leader
I'm sure I'm living in Alice in Wonderland's planet.  This is surely an upside down world we are living in today.  I see that Hamas has the chutzpa to be taking Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for something during the constant war between the two;  War Crimes.  Terrorists who terrorize are suing the most legalistic and moral state in the world! Israel!
The sad thing is that people such as the court and others are going along with it.  Logic is not king anymore.

Dr. Ghazi Hamad born 1964
former chairman of the border crossings authority in Gaza

The plaintiff is the spokesman for the PA Executive Committee made up of 45 members.  They have taken their grievance to the ICC.  Dr. Ghazi Hamad is their spokesman, the deputy foreign minister of the terrorist group, Hamas, who have been actively warring against Israel since being given Gaza by Israel.  The committee also includes 2 other terrorist organizations;  the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF).

Faou Bom Bensouda, born 1961
ICC's chief prosecutor since June 2012
Gambian lawyer and minister of justice in Gambia,
a small state born in 1965.

The prosecutor for the ICC is a woman, Fatau Bensouda of Gambia, Africa.  She secretly colluded with the PA against
Israel according to a Jordanian newspaper. A previous investigation of silly charges of systemic human rights abuses by the British military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq showed up her conduct of bias.
No wonder that the PA's negotiator, Saeb Erekat, thinks the ICC investigation will prove to be successful in Hamas's favor.  Gambia's standards of moral conduct in war must be a lot different!!

The US State Department revoked her visa in early April 2019.  She had been investigating whether US servicemen or US officials engaged in war crimes in Afghanistan Poland, Romania and Lithuania.  The UN officials criticized the US for doing this.  Was she picking on the US all of a sudden?

Like the US, Bensouda's beef with Israel is expansive.  The ICC is ready to begin an investigation of ALLEGED war crimes by Israeli soldiers against Arab civilian citizens of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.  Bensouda said on April 30th that she would go ahead with the investigation if the pre-trial judges of ICC tell her that she is on solid ground to start the inquiry.

"Legal affairs journalist Yonah Jeremy Bob writes that Israel's   IDF conducted at least 500 probes and more than 30 full inquiries into actions taken by Israeli soldiers during the 2014 Gaza conflict. In 2015, a commission of military figures from several democratic states that reviewed the military operations by Israel in the 2014 Gaza war established that "the IDF not only met its obligations under the Law of Armed Conflict but often exceeded these on the battlefield at significant tactical cost.""

According to the court's own rules, they are breaking the rules if they go ahead.  "According to the ICC's charter, the Court cannot investigate the conduct of non-signatory states of the 1998 Rome Statute that established the Court. Israel, like the U.S., is not a signatory of the statute."  They really have a warped sense of moral law if you ask me.
Hamas to shower Israel cities with missiles!

Hamas, started in 1987,  has been the major player in the terrorist war against Israel.  They have perpetuated 40% of suicide bombings and dominates Gaza.  They use rocket and mortar attacks and are closely tied to Syria, Iran and Lebanon.  Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Western Europe, Hezbollah and others fund them. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department.  They have built a lot of tunnels with that money.  One use of them is to pop up and attack or kidnap.

The PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, started in 1967, have been major players in the 1970s and 1980s.  This and related groups are small and considered miner players today.  They have been in Judea and Samaria (West Bank), Gaza, Syria and Lebanon.  They follow Marxist/Leninist, revolutionary nationalism through armed insurrection and refuse to recognize Israel. They broke off from PLO in 1974, but have rejoined again.

Arafat and his friends, Hillary Clinton and her daughter

The PLO started in 1964 and is the representative of the Palestinian people.  They are the political party in the PA.  They are accused by the international community of extensive corruption and theft of international aid during its governance of the PA.  They were guilty of plane hijackings, hostage taking, bombings, assassinations, targeted Israeli civilians and Jews globally, and conducted operations against Lebanese, Jordanians and Americans.  They tried to overthrow King Hussein of Jordan and was crushed by Hussein's army in September of 1970.  Arafat was their well-known leader.

Nuclear War Threats Against Israel and USA

Nadene Goldfoot

Syria's Nuclear Plant
The Iraqis and Syrians threatened nuclear bombing against Israel in 1981.  Major Yadlin and 7 other Israeli pilots bombed Osirak, an Iraqi nuclear reactor built for them by the French.  I was living in Safed, Israel at that time teaching English to junior high students there.

Syrians at Deir ez Zor fighting ISIS
Think what would happen if they had taken over a nuclear reactor.

Major Yadlin of the IDF went on to become chief of military intelligence in 2007.  He was in charge of collecting intelligence on the North Korean-built Syrian nuclear reactor in Deir ez Zor. This reactor was on the outskirts of Baghdad and seemed impossible to bomb.  At that time, it was too far from Israel to fly to and bomb.  But they dared, and it happened on June 7, 1981.  The 8 bombers felt they had just prevented another 2nd Holocaust.  In 2004, Yadlin thought they had failed to detect a Libyan nuclear project.  That's when his men discovered in 2006 a huge cement structure in Deir ez Zor hiding a North Korean plutonium reactor.  He shared this knowledge with the PM Ehud Olmert and an American intelligence chief, and both pooh-poohed his worries.  They had been following Aluf (General)  Meir Dagon, head of Mossad and was an Israel Defense Forces Major General who said that there was no Syrian reactor.  By March 2007, intelligence changed their position.  Dagon demanded immediate reaction before the reactor could be started up and before the Syrians found out that Israel knew of their secret.  Yadlin helped with Operation Orchard which was designed to also help Syria's President Assad save face:  no core, no war.

It went this way:  on September 5, 2007, 4 bombers, escorted by 4 other planes,  These 8 planes dropped 17 tons of explosives on the plutonium plant and flattened it.  Previously, the world had failed to prevent an Arab dictatorship from going nuclear.  The USA failed to act.  Israel was forced to take the initiative and do the job.

Between 2006 and 2010 Yadlin was the main man in Israeli operations against the Iranian nuclear project.

There was the Begin Doctrine by Menachem Begin, Prime Minister in June 1981, saying that Israel will not allow any enemy nation to acquire a nuclear weapon, and  Yadlin was following it.   Begin said after bombing in Osirak in Operation Opera, "We chose this moment: now, not later, because later may be too late, perhaps forever. And if we stood by idly, two, three years, at the most four years, and Saddam Hussein would have produced his three, four, five bombs. ... Then, this country and this people would have been lost, after the Holocaust. Another Holocaust would have happened in the history of the Jewish people. Never again, never again! Tell so your friends, tell anyone you meet, we shall defend our people with all the means at our disposal. We shall not allow any enemy to develop weapons of mass destruction turned against us."
Bushehr Nuclear Plant
Iran's testing of the Shahab missiles
The Shahab-3 represents Iran's first successful acquisition and development of a medium-range ballistic missile that give it the capability to threaten targets (such as Israel) which lie beyond its immediate borders.

The biggest and constant threats of destruction of Israel have been coming from Iran, which is further away from Israel than Iraq or Syria.  They are taking their time building such a bomb by doing it safely, whereas the others were in a hurry.  They built a reactor in Bushehr, another one in Arak, one at a military complex in Parchin, a uranium enriching facility in  Nataz, and an underground bunker in Fordow.  That's 5 different sites!   They are trying to do most of their work with international legitimacy.  Back in 2006 when Yadlin was the IDF's intelligence man, the Iranians had already started to enrich uranium in Natanz.

By November 2007, all 16 American spy agencies called the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) said that there was no good evidence that Iran was trying to build a nuclear weapon.  The NIE didn't want George W. Bush from acting against Iran and starting a 3rd World War.  Yet, 4 different Israeli teams in Mossad and in their military intelligence said Iran was advancing towards military nuclear capabilities and the Americans grossly underestimated the state of the Iranian program.

Iran's Fajr 5, a long distance,  missile heading toward Israel
Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad

Israel saw how much Iran wanted to be leader in the Middle East where Saudi Arabia held that title at the time.  It had much to do with being leader in Islamic thinking as much as anything else.  Today, even the Middle Eastern Arab nations are expecting Israel to protect them from Iran who threatens them all.

As for other nations, France and Britain seem to understand Iran's motivation.  China, Russia and India had been partially collaborating with Iran.  Many countries in Europe were continuing to trade with Iran.

Israel itself was tied up politically and not quite focused on Iran as it should have been.  In the meantime, Iran's centrifuges have been multiplying and their uranium has been piling up.

PM Netanyahu at UN explaining how close Iran Was to Nuclear Capability
The Democrats walked out when he spoke to the Senate about it.
This is the famous red-line speech  done in 2012.  He asked for international action.  The critical benchmark was 2013-14.  The destiny of Israel was
in Obama's hands.

In 2009 Benjamin Netanyahu became Prime Minister in April and his feelings were that Iran would be another Nazi Germany of the 21st Century.  To him, the West of the 2000s were more like the West of the 1930s as far as Jews were concerned.  He was determined not to let Jews be led again to some sort of nuclear Auschwitz.  He knew his life's mission was to prevent Iran from going nuclear.  Netanyahu's speech may have had an impact on those who listened in the UN. There was international pressure afterwards.

President  Rouhani of Iran
Hassan Rouhani is an Iranian politician serving as the current and seventh President of Iran since 3 August 2013. He was also a lawyer, academic, former diplomat and Islamic cleric
.

That brought about Iranian political change of 2013.

Several of our heads had left for a luncheon that was more important to them.  Now Iran has passed the point of stopping them.  Israel will be forced to choose between being hit by the bomb or bombing the plant.

What they did not understand is the mindset of the Syrians and how their religion sees things differently.  They are deadly serious but very impressive.  To the Israelis, they were also a more distant problem with the Palestinians taking up all their attention.  Americans had their hands full with al-Qaeda and Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dimona is Israel's nuclear reactor.  That one reactor has been keeping Israel protected from all the Muslim nations that surround her.  There's always that possibility that Israel will get fed up and use it.

Worldwide INTEL Still Expanding, Maybe in Israel

Nadene Goldfoot

The birth of Intel Corporation took place on July 18, 1968 in Santa Clara, California.  .  It is the largest multinational semi conductor chip maker in the world.   They make the micro processors found in personal computers.

They have had several branches in Hillsboro, Oregon, where many Israelis have come to work.  Intel has also expanded to Arizona and New Mexico.  Reports from Israel this past weekend tell of Intel's undecided decision about where to build a new chip factory.   The two prospects are Kiryat Gat, Israel or Ireland.  They are almost finished building new fabs in Hillsboro and Arizona.  The new fab in Hillsboro is called DIX where they will work on larger,  and better 450-millimeter silicon wafers.  That will affect fabs all over the world.

It all depends on whether or not they can secure a large subsidy from the Israeli government.  Intel wants Israel to pay 10% of the cost, $300 million to $400 million.  This project could boost the company's employment in Kiryat Gat by 3,000.  There is also another site in Haifa, Israel.

Intel has been leasing  a factory to Micron, but Micron is planning on shutting it down, so Intel is either going to overhaul this (fab) or build a new one according to Haaretz and the business publication "Globes."

Intel expanded in Ireland 2 years ago.

The Aftermath in Syria After Military Complex With Missiles Hit

Nadene Goldfoot

Syria's Civil War of Two Years, Supporters of Hezbollah

While Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel kept his appointment in China, who was hosting both Netanyahu and the "Palestinian President" Mahmoud Abbas Monday,  the USA Secretary of State, John Kerry, was in Russia to talk with them because they are Syria's most powerful ally.   The visit in China centered on their interest in playing a more active role in diplomacy because they are looking for more "markets, resources and diplomatic influence".

The  window of circumstance had opened, meanwhile, back in Israel where they had discovered that there existed extensive missiles at a site meant for Hezbollah terrorists to use against Israel.  This complex must also hold the chemical weapons they have already started to use.  Because of that alone, Israel was forced to issue gas masks to their entire population.  We know that they had two choices;  wait to be hit by thousands of missiles that could reach and wipe out Tel Aviv and hit as far as southern Israel from inside Lebanese territory or conduct a preemptive strike, which they have had to defer to before.  These missiles are bad enough as they are, but could also be tipped with chemical warfare.   Unlike the USA, information is accurate from their sources and the danger  is so close that one can just about see the target with binoculars from Israel.

The decision was made, unofficially.    It wasn't like not having warned Bashar Assad before about this problem.  Israel pin pointed the target and reports are that the sky was lit up.  The arms that were hit were causing a boom and a very frightful force felt by many.  In the end, we find that that this airstrike on Syria's military complex near Damascus killed about 42 Syrian soldiers.

The USA could not make such a decision and also its existence was not threatened like Israel is.  It's been aiding the rebels in other more humanitarian ways with such things as food.  Now Moscow realizes, and should have known anyway, that Israel wasn't waiting around for approval from the international community to deter this threat to their lives.  When Israel says, "This is the red line,"  they mean it.  Russia and China, giants of countries, have blocked USA's efforts 3 times already to even pressure Assad into stepping down.  Iran doesn't want him to, either, as he's their puppet and also on their take.

What this can cause now is a switch over of sympathy and it gives the Arabs cause to go over to Assad's side instead of the rebels.  The main picture in the Oregonian is that of Iranian and Syrian students chanting slogans during an anti-Israel demonstration Monday in front of the UN office in Tehran, Iran.  This will cause many to join them in their assessment against Israel, who are against them anyway.  Now they can really yell.

Assad has managed to kill off over 70,000 of his own people in his zeal to hold onto his kingship in the past 2 years alone.  Evidently life in such a police state was hard to deal with, causing such an Arab Spring in the first place.  It's been hard to rule people in Syria and Iraq as it is which has brought on such hard-nosed rulers in the first place who deal with an extremely volatile people.  These are hot countries that have hot-headed people.  Assad is holding onto what he thinks is his for dear life.  He's not about to step down.

Crippled Syria is nevertheless calling out that this strike that they figure came from Israel is a declaration of war.  I have news for Syria.  They never signed a peace agreement with Israel, either, and has been one of the prime leaders in all the wars against Israel.  It's known in this world that if one country has threatening moves on another, whether it be thousands of soldiers lined up ready to strike or missiles known to be destined to hit that country, one is allowed a pre-emptive strike for self defense.

By conducting this important airstrike, of which CNN TV news has had non-stop videos and comments yesterday, Israel inadvertently aided the rebels a great deal by destroying the military complex completely.  One cannot find but pieces of it remaining.  The blast permeating from it shows the level of the contents inside; huge.

The rebel were not asleep .  They shot down a military helicopter which killed 8 government troops in the east, while another group of rebels were inside a sprawling military air base in the north fighting on their 2nd day Sunday and Monday.  Assad's warplanes were pounding rebel positions inside the Mannagh air base in the north and the army had regained control of 6 villages that link the northern city of Aleppo with its airport.

The report from Syria's "OMRAN AL-ZOUBI, Syrian Information Minister: The Israeli invaders committed a blatant act of aggression against Syria. The Syrian military has the right and responsibility to protect its country and people from any form of infringement either at home or abroad."  Yes sir, if anyone has the right to kill off Syrians, it is the Syrian government.  How can this man keep a straight face when he says this?

Israeli Talks Centered in Istanbul

Nadene Goldfoot                                                     Omar Sharif in "Lawrence of Arabia": Fighting the Ottoman Empire

Turkey's Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan outraged most of the Western world by calling Zionism a "crime against humanity" at the UN.  At that moment Israeli and Palestinian Authority lawmakers were meeting with each other in Istanbul trying to re-start the peace process.  From being a friend to Israel a few years ago, he has moved towards the Muslim Brotherhood ideals.

On Friday John Kerry, the new US Secretary of State, arrived in Turkey to talk with Erdogan which included some of his strong language.  "At a press appearance in Ankara, Kerry condemned Erdogan’s comparison saying, "We not only disagree with it, we found it objectionable."

I've read an essay from a Turkish newscaster who is as loving and sweet as any young women in my own family.  She tries to answer about the antagonistic stance against Israel that her country has been displaying.  She feels there is a strong bond between the Turkish and Israeli public and hopes that the tension of the last few years is only temporary.  Most of the problem lies with the Mavi Marmara episode when this Turkish ship tried to break the blockade with this ship.  I wish she were president, as she stated that "as the Turkish nation, we want nothing more than the continuance of Israel's existence in peace and tranquility."  Perhaps that's why these meetings took place in Ankara.

Also meeting in Istanbul to discuss Obama's visit was labor MK Yitzchak Herzog. Yitzchak is the son of former president Chaim Herzog and is with the Labor party.  Netanyahu is with Likud.   He was there to speak with PA former official,  Yasser Abed Rabbo.  Neither man is a high official, so possibly took their own initiative to meet together.  Herzog was taped on Israel's Channel 10 News saying that he believes "that there is a chance for peace with their neighbors and we must not give up on it, not even for a moment.  Rabbo was a supporter of the Oslo Accords.  Yet he was promoting the false accusation that Israel had dug mass graves for 900 PA Arabs in Jenin.  He has since been removed from his post as a minister when Mahmoud Abbas took over.  Now he's just an adviser without a title.

If he's so for peace, it's crazy that Rabbo  would be so gullible as to even believe in such a terrible lie.   It's frightening how the Arabs can swallow such lies about Jews, even the intelligent ones in the seat of power. It gets back to the fact that what people would do themselves to others, they think that these others would do to them. It's  sort of like the Golden Rule.  It was not inconceivable to do this to Jews, evidently.  Our beliefs and mores are very foreign to Muslims except for the belief in one G-d. The problem lies on what that one G-d teaches the people involved.    For us to act so differently, the lessons are not understood in the same way.  Evidently this is also true with Christians who even interpret the very same doctrine otherwise.

I suggest that our government get busy and read many books on the subject of the Middle East.  I just read where Kerry read his first book about Islam which was from a very positive and flattering viewpoint.  Now he would be interested in studying about religions if he were not Secretary of State.   He should also read one I've started to read, "The Strong Horse" by Lee Smith.  It's full of insights about the Middle Eastern countries and what they admire in a culture and how they see themselves acting in it.  He's lived in the Middle East and even met Omar Sharif, the Egyptian who played the Jewish gambler, Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand's great love. "His decision to work with co-star Barbra Streisand angered Egypt's government at the time due to Streisand's support for the state of Israel.  She happens to be Jewish. . Streisand herself responded with "You think Cairo was upset? You should've seen the letter I got from my Aunt Rose!" Sharif reprised the role in the film’s sequel, Funny Lady in 1975."

The culture is so different from our Western culture and it's a challenge to understand this great difference.  According to Smith, Israel is not the big problem of the Islamic countries.  I hope all the talks go on well, just like talks between Barbra  and Omar  did when they worked together.  Oh, those love scenes!  .

Iran Plans Nuclear Weapons; Get Hit With Earthquakes

Nadene Goldfoot
Tehran, Iran has progressed towards the manufacture and assembly of a nuclear warhead.  This makes Iran the biggest problem Israel is facing.  Iran must never get nuclear weapons.

Israel is suspected of having the Middle East area's only nuclear arsenal, but have never used any, even though they've been in some tough spots.  This is the difference.  It's been enough to let people think they have this force.  They're not about to go half cocked and use anything like it.  Israel  values life; those of their own and of others.  They're not anxious to test what happens when they die and have no 72 virgins to greet them upon death.  The toast they make is "L'chaim!  "To Life."

In order to protect the lives of their citizens, they have spent a lot of money for protection.  In this category they have the Iron Dome, a method of catching missiles, an SMS system for warning of imminent missile attacks and the Arrow 2.  .  They have worked on this consistently in view of Iran's progress.

Another group to worry about and watch are Lebanon's Hezbollah militia who are right on their border.  Of course, Syria is said to have chemical weaponry they might use on their own people.  Then again they are right on Israel's border as well.  Israel has had to pass out gas masks to their whole population several times already.  The 7.8 million population only has enough gas masks for half the population so far today.

The problem in Israel has been the southern area who have been in striking distance of Gaza with Hamas Terrorists firing at them almost constantly.  They need bomb shelters for 700,000 citizens now.   Hospitals need to be fortified.  Ashkelon's hospital  has had to go underground being they are within striking distance of Gaza already, but 70% of the hospitals need further fortification.

While Israel is extremely worried, being so much closer and on the hit list at the top, the USA has been less worried.  Our intelligence services say that they just suspect Iran is seeking a weapons capability but that no decision has been taken on actually making one.  Is the USA going to wait till Iran strikes first with nuclear weapons?  Netanyahu feels that sanctions haven't been a deterrent.

While all this worry in Israel has been going on, something happened in Iran on Saturday.  They were hit with 2 earthquakes, which have filled up their hospitals since about 5,000 people were injured.  The first was a 6.4 and the 2nd was 6.3 that struck 11 minutes later.  That was a double whammy.  They occurred 37 miles NE of Tabriz and 30 miles NE of Tabriz.  The quakes have killed almost 300 people.  They've had 60 aftershocks and are lacking enough tents and supplies so that people had to sleep in the night air without protection.  Homes were destroyed and livestock also were killed.  About 36,000 people were in the quake area and received emergency shelter finally.

One thing you can bet on.  Israel always goes to earthquake hit areas to help out, but won't be going to Iran.  They would not be welcomed at all, no matter how much help they could offer.  That's the way it is in the Middle East.  this East Azerbaijan province is a mountainous region neighboring Azerbaijan and Armenia in the north.  Tabriz itself was not hurt.  It looks like the Iranians got a reminder of what happens when a country is under attack, even when when coming from Mother Nature.    They did experience earthquake devastation before in 2003 when they had a 6.6 earthquake.

I wonder how their centers for manufacturing nuclear weapons hold up in these earthquake rumblings.
update: 8/14/12  Iran is now saying it will take help from any country.  Israel isn't offering any after being rebuffed in their 2003 earthquake when Iran said "anyone but Israel."

Syria, Israel's Northern Border-Neighbor and What's New For Assad

Nadene Goldfoot
The border road is dangerous.  Pvt. Dor Gan, 19 years old, was killed while patrolling along the Syrian border fence near Yonathan village.  Three soldiers were injured when their jeep turned over.

Syria has long-range rockets that can carry poison warheads to any part of Israel, stated Major General Yair Naveh when speaking in a ceremony to the IDF soldiers at a memorial for fallen soldiers of the Sultan Yakoub Battle with the Syrian army in 1982.  He said nothing has changed since then in the way Syrians act.

Mazraat al-Qubeir, Syria was found to be massacred and deserted said UN monitors.    Government forces had been here, and had either shot or stabbed 50-80 people including women and children.

The Sunni rebels are not all that nice, either.  Germans are reporting that 98 deaths in Sunni town of Houla on May 25 were caused by these rebels who massacred the Alawite and Shiite families.  It is said that they even filmed the dead and presented them as Sunni.

Switzerland has frozen Syrian bank deposits and banned Syrian government bonds in trade.  In other words, they have been blacklisted.  Never mind though, Russia is supplying them with arms.  They're not taking sides, Russia said.  It  must be just business deals.  Russia is still against using force on Syria and has called for an international conference with the permanent Secuity Council powers, the European Union and influential countries in the area like Iran  to talk about the Annan plan.

It seems that the US has been arming the Syrian rebels according to Serge Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister  in Tehran.  This was in reply to Hillary Clinton's charge that Moscow is sending helicopters to Syria for Assad.

Barack Obama said on June 11th that the USA Navy and Air Force are ordered to get ready to have a limited air offensive against Syria.  They are to knock out the central regime and military command centers.

As I watched TV back in 1980-1985 in Israel, I remember seeing the Syrian army show off their prowess by staging the most horrible exhibit of their capabilities I've ever seen.  They were standing at attention and in unison, bit into snakes, and then into puppies, right on TV.  I was sick.  I think it was to scare the audience into not messing with them.  It was traumatic to view and I haven't forgotten the horror of it.  From that experience, I can believe anything about their inhumanity.  If it wasn't doctored filming, it certainly was believable in those days.

Iran Lets Cat Out of the Bag About Nuclear Weapons

Nadene Goldfoot
A commentary written by Alireza Forghani that just came out Sunday "The necessity for the Islamic world to have the Atomic Bomb" lets the cat out of the bag about Iran's intentions for producing nuclear energy.  He is the former governor of Iran's Kish Province and an analyst for the Ayatollah Khamenei.  He thinks all Muslim majority countries should help them get the nuclear bomb to disrupt the dreams of America and Israel.  He says it is their right to have a nuclear bomb and that Israel would have been gone 30 years ago but has such a weapon, keeping it here.  Frankly, I don't think Saudi Arabia would be very excited over Iran having the A Bomb, or even Iraq, who fought a huge war with Iran in the 1980's.

Forghani even laid out a legal case for the destruction of Israel and all Jewish people in February.  It of course played in Iran only, and calls for a pre-emptive strike on Israel.  Fars News was happy to run this piece because it is run by the Revolutionary Guards and express the views of the Islamic regime.

He notes that the USA and Pakistan have the bomb and that America is the main enemy of Iran.  The Syrians and Lebanese Muslims, he says, are worried about being attacked by the USA if they don't cooperate.  Of course it has nothing to do with their shooting down their own people.

He goes on to rave about the Islamic republic being threatened by America and they know Iran will be attacked. and recalls the Cold War against Russia.  America's being in Iraq and Afghanistan gives him fuel to project hatred.

We now see the failure between Iran and 6 world power nations in negotiations.  Iran refuses to suspend their nuclear enrichment and won't let inspectors see certain suspected sites.  They threaten counterattack for any aggression.  More threats are made on the USA than Israel in this article.  I think they fear a combined attack and of course the USA has more weaponry in its arsenal.

Other websites as well are reporting that the International Atomic Energy Agency is reporting a disappointing outcome from Friday's meeting..  In fact, they have retreated from previous commitments they had already made. Even China asked them to compromise.   Another meeting is scheduled in Moscow for June 18th, which is this coming Monday.  If nothing is successful even with sanctions in place, a European Union Oil embargo will be enforced on July 1st.  Only Iran's foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, is confident of the final outcome.
