Sunday:Israel's Neighbors in Devastation: Sunni-Shi'a Battle Involving Hezbollah in Lebanon-Assad of Syria

Nadene Goldfoot

The neighbors of Israel are having a power war involving the two divisions of Islam, Sunni and Shi'a.  Hezbollah terrorists have openly said that they are fighting with President Assad's forces against his own Syrians who have rebelled against his regime.  President Bashar Assad belongs to the Alawite sect of Islam which is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.  The Syrian rebels are Sunnis. Hezbollah terrorism is Shi'ia.  Iran backs Shi'a and Russia backs them as well.  Syria is the 17th largest Muslim majority country in the world with over 22 million Sunni and Shi'a mixed Muslim population following the Hanafa or Alevi fiqhs.

Assad, after much precious time has been wasted, has finally said he is allowing UN investigators into Syria to investigate allegations of chemical warfare, at least 4 days after the fact.  All that the inspectors really should do is talk to the "Doctors Without Borders" who have treated within 3 hours about 3,600 patients since the onset on Wednesday morning in their 3 clinics  of which 54 children, 82 women-322 in all have died.  This includes rebel fighters as well.  The doctors had treated these people for breathing problems, dilated pupils, convulsions, foaming at the mouth and blurred vision.  Even some of the medics had the symptoms of which 1 has died.  What was the cause?  The doctors say it is a neurotoxic agent.  The 3 centers who reported these findings were medical centers near the site of the suspected chemical weapons attack near Damascus.

Syria's government is in denial about using these chemicals, but TV news over NBC has statements saying that Assad has reacted violently because of an attempted attack on him.  He is saying that his soldiers had found chemical supplies in places that had been taken by rebel forces.  Russia, Syria's backer,  thinks the rebels used chemicals and others think that Assad's enemies have the supplies or the ability to get them. Even some US officials  feel that Assad's forces had used chemical weapons on a small scale many times already in this past year.  It's said that the US is still trying to gather information to find out just what had happened.

This power war has spread into Lebanon where in Tripoli, a Sunni city, 2 mosques, Taqwa and Salam,  were attacked on Friday at noon.  This is looked at as a revenge attack between Sunni and Shi'a..  The results are that more than 500 were injured of which 300 are still in hospital, 65 in critical care. 47 or more have died from the double bombing.

The scene was devastating with bodies scattered beside burning cars, smoking vehicles with charred people trapped inside, bloodied injured coming out of thick black smoke and people all shouting and screaming while rushing the victims away towards waiting help.

The effect on the Lebanese on Israel's northern border, a small state of about 4,196,453 with 60% Muslim population made up of Sunni and Shi'a, who used to have a Christian government that was ousted,  has caused civilians to arm themselves and set up checkpoints by Saturday near the mosques hit while their security forces patrolled the streets.  Recently, there have also been small-scale clashes like Iraq-style car bombings.  One occurred over a week ago in the Shiite district south of Beirut which is controlled by Hezbollah and killed 27 people.

The USA said Saturday that US intelligence agencies are trying to gather facts to decide what happened in Syria.  Their navy is prepared to act with destroyers carrying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles the likes of which were also used in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

In the meantime, Tunisians demonstrated on Saturday calling for the resignation of their Islamist-led government.  They called out,"We tried you, you failed, now leave,"  This is a first in their "week of departure" for the government.  Tunisia, with a population of about 10,383,577 of which 98% are Sunni Muslims, has an educated middle-class population and is thought to have the best chance of becoming a working democracy-especially since Egypt has turned the tables on their Muslim Brotherhood president.

As for the over 91 million of Egypt, the military government has had to shorten their imposed night-time curfew to bring about stability from all their unrest at reacting to the ousting of the head of the Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi, as their president elected.  Their Arab Spring was short-lived, overcome by the storm brought in by Morsi.  Fridays would maintain the length of the curfew, though.  Having such a curfew is hard on shoppers and hurts Cairo's bustling night life and revenue for the businesses, hotels and restaurants.  Cairo alone has 18 million people.  The military is going after the Brotherhood's top and mid-level opponents and are the ones committing acts of terrorism, shown by the recent attacks on churches and government buildings.  The Muslim Brotherhood had been ousted by Sadat, and only recently came into power by ousting Mubarak in their "Arab Spring." "Arrests and killings appear to have weakened the Brotherhood's ability to mobilize its following."

And what seems to be the most prevalent problem in the Middle East?  Israel building a few apartment buildings in territory the Palestinians are drooling to take over which also holds Israeli citizens as well; thus the fight over territory; the ancient original  Jewish Israel (Samaria) and Judah and Jerusalem which the Arabs covet.

Too Much Trust in The Free Syrian Army Rebels And Why

Nadene Goldfoot
The Free Syrian Army is commanded by General Salim Idris.  This group much history in engaging in joint operations with the Al-Nusra Front which is better known as the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda in Iraq.  Gerneral Idris disavowed the Al-Nusra Front in order to get American military assistance. He denied that the Front was a terrorist group and tried to stop the Americans from blacklisting it.  If he thinks they're kosher, he will go on collaborating with them.  Last October these two groups seized a Scud missile base together.

The Free Syrian Army isn't much better than the Syrian National Council which is already controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood.  Nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force.  The Islamist brigades like the Muslim Brotherhood's Tawheed Brigade and the Islamist Farouk Brigades are the strong leaders of the Free Syrian Army.  It was the Farouk commander who was seen on video eating a Syrian soldier's lungs.  This goes along with what I saw on Syrian TV between 1980-85 in a demonstration of Syrian strength which was meant to scare the beejeebees out of their enemies.  It scared me plenty.

Everyone in the area of fighting the Syrian government seems to already be members of the Muslim Brotherhood.  Idris's 2 deputies, Abdelbasset Tawil of Idleb  has ties to a Salafist Jihadist group, Ahrar al-Sham.  Their goal is to create an Islamic state in Syria.

It is known that fighters and commanders routinely go from one brigade to another.  They have loosse affiliations of militias and are held together by fundraising and ideology.  YouTube videos mark their celebrations of kills and is the way they raise money.  Militias fight among themselves over control of assets like bakeries and oil wells.

Americans are questioning whether we are going from declaring war on Islamic terrorism to arming Islamic terrorists by  John McCain's trip to Syria where he met with General Salim Idris.  McCain is pushing for the USA to have a no-fly zone and to arm these Syrian Sunni rebels with heavy weaponry.  Every time I hear things like this I think that they will soon be used against Israel as they'll get into those hands that would love to attack Israel.  John is confident that the weapons from the USA would go to the "right" hands.  John is snowed enough to say that the rebels are not al Qaida and are not extremists.  He says that al Qaeda only makes up a small percentage of all the rebels.

Right now, only food and aid are going in to displaced people.  The rebels are holding Qusayr after 3 weeks of battle.  They are not going to allow the Red Cross into the city until the battle is over.  The rebels are fighting against Hezbollah terrorists who are allies with the Syrian government.

Assad's government has been terrible.  He has ruled like Czar.  The question is, given the Muslim Brotherhoods' influence, are the rebels any better?  Is this a step up or a step down.  Now Syria is under control of Iran and Iran answers to Russia.  Syria is receiving all sorts of weapons that will ultimately, give them a day or two, be used against Israel, for that is Iran's ultimate goal.  Well meaning Syrians have had to escape the madness and find themselves in refugee camps or other points of refuge.  What sort of government awaits them if they ever find they can return to their deserted homes.

With Israel caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, they would prefer al-Qaeda, says the website algemeister.  That shows you how bad Assad has become.

Fillipino Peacekeepers Kidnapped By al-Qaida Backed Rebels

Nadene Goldfoot
For the 2nd time this year, Syrian rebels have kidnapped UN peacekeepers  on the ceasefire line between Syria and Israel along the Golan Heights.  21 peace keepers were kidnapped in March and now they have taken 4 Filipino peacekeepers right opposite Jamlah, a Syrian village yesterday.  The kidnappers are communicating to the outside world by tweeting.

Their excuse is to keep them safe.  Safe from what?  Pictures released show the 4 peacekeepers sitting with bare feet.  That's either to keep them from running away or-the rebels need new boots.  Kidnappers kidnap people for some reason, usually money.  What are they plotting to receive in exchange of  the lives of these young men?  It's the same kidnappers as in March, the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade.  They are a branch of Al Qaida.  We have al Qaida in the act here along with Hezbollah in Lebanon.  What an area.

The UN has had peacekeepers in the Golan Heights since 1974.

Three Lost Syrian Tanks Who Are in Israel's Golan Heights

Nadene Goldfoot
Are they really off track?  Three Syrian tanks entered the Golan Heights, home to 18,000 Jews, and  belonging to Israel on Saturday.  It's a demilitarized zone.  The distance from the Golan to Haifa is only 60 miles!  The violence in Syria seems to be spilling into Israel now.  These tanks haven't left yet.  They have been attacking Syrian rebels.  The is the first incursion in the past 40 years.

Of course Israel has complained to the UN about it.  Israelis have reported hearing the shouting of  "Allahu Akbar!"  The UN response is low-key saying it didn't see the Syrian armor as an immediate threat.  So for them it's okay for an enemy to park 60 miles from a major Israeli city and make war on its people from Israel and of course they won't turn an then attack Israelis.

However, Israel is not stupid.  The IDF is ready to defend Israel.  The area is very small consisting of 250,000 acres , but surely these tanks know where they arrived.  The Golan Heights was a part of the 1967 War that Israel won against huge odds of the many Muslim countries against tiny Israel. The word "Heights" tells you of the terrain.  It is from 400 to 1700 feet high and overlooks the Huleh Valley.   The Golan Heights is important to Israel for their security measures.  Otherwise an enemy can bombard Israel from on high. The Arabs would bombard kibbutzim along the upper Jordan Valley. " In a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the Syrians overran the Golan Heights before being repulsed by Israeli counterattacks.  After the war, Syria signed a disengagement agreement that left the Golan in Israel's hands".  Many Israelis live there today.  There is one major city and 32 towns.   In 1985 the population, include the Druze was 22,500.

Our history goes way back with the Golan Heights.  It had come into Moses's hands when King Og ruled the  Amorites of Bashan. Og, referred to as a giant,  was killed by the Israelites at Edrei   The kings of Israel had to fight the Aramaeans from Damascus here.  Golan had been a city of refuge for the Jews.  It was a capital in 2nd Temple times and had a Jewish settlement until the 5th Century CE.

In the meantime, Islamic Syrian militants made an assault on a Syrian airbase in the north.  They were trying to disrupt strikes by Syrian warplanes and helicopters.  These government planes hit targets in the Damascus suburbs and killed at least 10 and wounded dozens.  So if that's where the rebels were, why are the tanks in the Golan Heights?

The Golan Heights would be big enough for 400 settlers in Oregon who would have bought 640 acre plots that had been offered to them for $1 per acre in the Homestead Act of 1862 with one farmer being shorted. Then again, since most couldn't afford this, 320 acre plots were sold off.
