Lebanon Fired at Northern Israel
Nadene Goldfoot
The border between Lebanon and Israel has been quiet in the past few years.  When I lived in Safed, Major Hadad of the Christian Militia guarded it and we were kept safe from terrorists for a while until things heated up around 1982 when they went into Sabra and Shatilla and overstepped their boundaries by executing the Palestinian terrorists.  Now Hadad has died and I don't think the Christian group is active with us anymore.

In October of 2009, these same Lebanese terrorists fired a Katyusha on the Upper Galille and wounded an Israeli.  The IDF answered with a half dozen rounds of fire.  Terrorists seem to keep trying, but the IDF is prepared to protect Israel.

In January of 2009 three missiles were fired and exploded near Kiryat Shimona without causing damage.  This is my favorite town with a department store similar to Meier &Frank.  During my ulpan days of 1980, my co-student friend went to that town over a vacation period and couldn't leave as she was in the bomb shelter for the whole time and it was unsafe to leave it.  We had no cell phones in those days and so we worried about what had happened to her. Many American Jews had made aliyah and lived up there, and they were very upset. They weren't used to living under such stress.  The northern Galilee was being constantly attacked from Lebanon then, and we in Safed were not very far away.  I think we drove to Kiryat Shimona in 1/2 hour.

August found a Lebanese army soldier opening fire on Israeli soldiers manning the northen border.  That was the first border incident in a year.

Now, four or more Katyusha missiles from Lebanon were fired into northern Israel last night.  They exploded near the border  of Ma'alot and Kfar V'radim and caused some damage to a building.  It was thought  that explosions came from the Lebanese side of the border at first.

IDF forces fired back and considers this a serious incident.  The Lebanese army is responsible for the prevention of firing at Israel.

Egyptian Sinai's Future of Maintaining Contracts with Israel and Jordan
Nadene Goldfoot
According to the Jewish "Tanakh" or bible, the Israelites crossed the Sinai Peninsula during the Exodus in 1313 BCE.  Since then it has been in Egypt's hands, and then became part of  the Ottoman Empire.

In 1948 Egypt invaded Israel from the Sinai.  In 1956 Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal and stopped Israeli ships from entering.  Israel, Britain and Franced then invaded the Sinai and occupied the peninsula.  This led to the U.N. Emergency Forces to take over the area.

In 1967 Egypt blockaded Eilat and ordered the UN forces out.  This was the beginning of the Six Day War where Egypt's army was defeated by Israel who then took over the peninsula.  A Peace treaty was signed in 1979 and Israel withdrew totally by 1982.  Since then from Sadat to Mubarak's rule, there has been peace between Egypt and Israel, even allowing tourism to happen.  Two of my friends from the Ulpan were tourists in Egypt from 1980 to 85.

Now we have the "Arab Spring" where Mubarak, dying, has been on trial where Egyptians have taken over his helm of rule.  With the Muslim Brotherhood being the best organized group, I see them taking over.  Their charter is strickly anti-Israel, anti- Jewish so this is not a welcome to Israel.  Already their gas supplies have been sabatoged that service both Israel and Jordan.  The first time was February 5th, then there was a foiled attack in March. There was an explosion at the pumping station along the pipeline at Nagah.  Armed men with machine guns came in a small truck and forced the guards to leave.  Then they planted explosive charges.   The second attack was April 27th and the 3rd was Saturday, May 2nd. Egypt said it was done by a big terrorist operation.

40% of Israel's natural gas comes from this source which is used to create electricity.  A contract was signed in December 2010 by four  Israeli firms to import gas for the next 20 years.   Jordan also imports enough to service 80% of their needs.  In May Egypt backed down in their contract with Jordan and demanded high prices from them.  Gasco is the company operating the pipeline

Both Jordan and Israel are affected economically by these terrorist attacks.  Egypt needs to do a better job of guarding their money-making industry.  Hopefully the time is not too distant that Israel can enjoy its own natural gas that has been discoverred.  With continued peace between Jordan and Israel, Jordan can also benefit from Israel's holdings.  Then neither will be dependent on Egypt's sources.  Right now both states have reserves to rely upon so as not to disrupt service to their people.

Update: 9/9/11 Israel's ambassador has been forced to leave the embassy which was attacked by people with hammers.  docments and the flag were thrown out of the window.  He is flying back to Israel.

The source of any peace right now with Egypt seems to be in the hands of their military who are abiding by the peace treaty.  There doesn't seem to be any serious collapse of the cold peace as yet, although I wouldn't travel to Egypt now as a tourist.  A cousin of mine did a few years ago from South Africa.  They're going to find that their tourism industry is hurting.

Eilat Area Receives Multiple Attacks Thursday
Nadene Goldfoot
6 / now 7 now 8 Israelis were killed and 25/updated to 33 injured around 20 kilometers north of Eilat around noon on Thursday.  The area was hit in three different incidences. Eilat is Israel's southernmost  city of 46,600 people.  It's a popular resort for international tourism being it's on the northern tip of the Red Sea on the Gulf of Eilat.  It sportss lovely beaches, great nightlife and desert landscapes.  Scandinavians love to go there for a sun tan and swimming.  It's also a major port for Israel.

1. An Israeli Egged Bus was driving along the Israel/Egyptian border in Southern Israel when a car passed loaded with terrorists who opened fire.  This happened on Highway 12.  Nine people were wounded.

2. A car driven by an Israeli with passengers was hit by an anti-tank missile in the second incident.

3. An IDF patrol vehicle was hit by either a grenade or some other kind of explosive device.

The IDF gave chase after the terrorists and fire was exchanged between the two.  Now the public has been advised to stay away from Highways 10 and 12 which are now closed.  Kerem Shalom and Erez Crossing are also closed between Gaza and Israel.  This is so the Security and Rescue forces can get their work done.

Eilat's neighbors are the Egyptian village of Taba and the Jordanian city of Aquaba.  One can even see Saudi Arabia across the Gulf.  The terrorists no doubt came from Gaza and belonged to Hamas.
