Who Lives in Judea and Samaria Today?

Nadene Goldfoot
Jewish Cities, Towns and Villages
                in Judea-Samaria

Israel won the Six Day War in 1967, a war started by the aggression of surrounding Arab nations.  Chances of winning were nil so it was a miracle that they did.  Since then 53 years have gone by.
Today there are in Judea and Samaria almost 200 cities, towns and a few villages that are populated by Jews; Jew who do care about their history, as this is the most historic area in Jewish history.  There are cities with the population of over 73,000 to villages of 150 population in Judea and Samaria.  These are lumped together by foreigners who call them all "settlements".  People don't realize the closeness that is going on in teeny Israel.  For instance, a "settlement" may exist only a few miles away from Jerusalem.

Update: 5/21/20 Area A:  Area A is the space in which the PA has political and military jurisdiction over its residents – all of whom are Arab.
This includes all of the major towns and their immediate environs – with the partial exception of Jewish Hebron, which came under exclusive Israeli control in the 1997 Hebron protocol between Israel and the PLO. This area comprises approximately 18 percent of Judea and Samaria’s land mass.

Area B:  In Area B, Israel and the PA share jurisdiction.

Judea and Samaria's Area CArea C, controlled by Israel under Oslo Accords, in blue and redMOST OF geographic Judea and Samaria (60% of the area) is designated Area C, over which Israel has exclusive jurisdiction both administratively and in security matters.

Area C’s distinguishing characteristic is that it was sparsely populated – by Arab or Jewish inhabitants.

It's interesting the the some towns Arabs are living in have history as Jewish towns.  "One-quarter of the 584 Arab localities in Israel and beyond the Green Line have ancient Biblical names. For example, Sakhnin was a Jewish town during the Talmudic era, and Beit Lehem is the Hebrew name for the biblical city of Bethlehem."  Homes have been found to still bear very old Hebrew inscriptions on them.

Most Arabs are as new in Israel as many of the Jews were for as researcher/journalist Joan Peters explained, came in following Jewish immigrants from surrounding areas to obtain jobs in building.  They were allowed to enter the country by the British who prevented Jewish immigration at the same time.

The name Judea, when used in Judea and Samaria, refers to all of the region south of Jerusalem, including Gush Etzion and Har Hebron. The region of Samaria, on the other hand, refers to the area north of Jerusalem. East Jerusalem has been incorporated into the Jerusalem District and is under Israeli civilian rule, and is thus excluded from the administrative structure of the Judea and Samaria Area.
Jerusalem is now a united city, no longer divided.

West Bank is not just land along the Jordan River but the whole mountain range of Judea and Samaria.  It is simply the appetizer if taken over for the dinner of the USA if attacked by enemies.  Comment by Mark Langfan.

Almost 450,000 Jews live in Judea and Samaria today. That's close to Portland, Oregon's population in 1990.

There are about 2.5--2.7 million Arabs living there as well,
about the same population as Toronto, Canada was in 2016.
The state of Israel now has a little over 6 million Jews and over 2 million Arabs, all who can vote.  Total as of today is
8,655,535.

Israel's land size is 8,550 sq. miles

Judea-Samaria's land size is 2,270 miles.
                  Total size:  10,820 sq. miles
Total size of Portland, Oregon is 145 sq. miles
Total size of Toronto, Canada is 243.3 sq miles

Israel was once compared to New Jersey's 7,439 sq miles, but Massachusetts might be as close with a listed 7,838 sq. miles.  Are they including the Dead Sea in Israel's measurements?

"As we have made consistently clear, we are prepared to recognize Israeli actions to extend Israeli sovereignty and the application of Israeli law to areas of the West Bank that the vision foresees as being part of the State of Israel," US State Department spokesperson says.

Differences in Ideology Keep Arabs Away From Peace Negotiations

Nadene Goldfoot
Map of Islamic World with Israel in Red.
See if you can find Israel.
On May 14, 1948, Israel became a state among the nations.  The Arabs of the area were also offered a state of their own and have resisted acceptance of such, though they cry out that they want their own state as well.  The problem is that the state they want is part of the small acreage that makes up Israel.

Here's a difference in ideology.  Israel's population is made up of 6 million Jews and 1.7 million Arabs and others.  It was created as the one Jewish state in the world on 8,000 sq miles and is to be the haven for Jews who have suffered from anti-Semitism for 2,000 years or more, depending on what attack we are starting from.  There are only 14 million Jews left in the world.  We make up only 0.02% of the world population.

There are already 48 Muslim majority states, possibly even more so depending on the material one is using.  Wikipedia as of 2011 said this.    Islam is the 2nd largest religious group in the world.  There are 1.62 billion Muslims in the world making up 23% of the world population.  They already claim 5,120,000 sq. miles of land.

There is no comparison here.  One is on the verge of extinction and the other's numbers are bulging, both in land and in population.

The Arab Palestinians will not come to terms with the Israelis.  They are bickering over the issue of established Jewish villages, town and cities they refer to as "settlements,"  a very poor choice of a noun describing this population.  That's because they lie in the A or B section of Judea-Samaria, the Jewish land the Jordans have labeled as the West Bank that they want for their state.  This is because of the 1967 War when Arabs attacked the Jews of Israel and the Jews won, which meant that they inherited legally land which was originally to be theirs in the first place by the law of 1920 through the League of Nations.  It's funny how this worked out.  The Arab greed for Israel meant that they lost what they had to Israel. I'd swear that Ha-Shem (G-d) stepped in and ran  interferrence for Israel.

At the same time, the Arabs keep on announcing that their state is to be all 100% Muslim and there are to be no Jews allowed.  Thus there is the matter of boundaries, and allowing the Jews in section C to be a part of Israel rather than to be displaced.

The Arabs are not bending over backwards in displaying any neighborly tendancies.  Instead, their texbooks for schools do not show Israel on their maps in Geography lessons.  Instead, Palestine is written as the name.  Is this a Freudian slip?  No, this is their true intention.  Their pre-schoolers are taught to admire suicide bombers.  These are their heroes instead of Superman.  What a philosophy this is!

Moshe Ya'alon is the Israeli Defense Minister.  He spoke on Monday  to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, a group made up not only of Jews but Arabs as well who are in the Knesset.  His topic was "Prospects for Peace with Palestinians."  He told them that we are ready to begin immediately without preconditions and discuss all the issues.  Israel's aim is not to rule the Palestinians.  Israel wants to advance the diplomatic process but Abbas is avoiding this by setting preconditions.  Israel is not about to pay any more futile prices just to get them to come to the table.

1973's Real Nitty-Gritty on Judaea and Samaria, Sinai and Gaza's Health Status With Israel

Nadene Goldfoot
One hour away from Rambam Hospital in Haifa, Israel, where I had my elbow operated on in 1982, an Israeli, Yuval Roth,  has been transporting sick Arabs there from Judea-Samaria (West Bank) for treatment.  So far, he has done this 500 times in the last 2 years.  In Gaza, medical treatment is extremely expensive for people who are not working.  Some have snuck through guard posts to get to Ashkelon's Hospital, the Barzilai Medical Center that has been in operation since 1961.  It's Israel's front line hospital on the Gaza border and services 502 square miles and a level 2 trauma center.  As 1,600 Kassam missile attacks have happened each year since 2006, they have had 100,000 emergency admissions each year.  They serve over 500,000 area residents. The cafeteria is regularly converted into hospital bed space to accommodate everyone.  The situation of health for Palestinians was well planned starting in 1967 .   Along came the  October 1973 war.  By 2005,  Palestinians in Gaza had elected the Hamas terrorists to be their government.  Below I outline the situation from 1967 to 1973 and what all Israel had done for them in the line of health services, even though Israel has been in 7 major defensive wars with them and other Arab nations since 1948.

                                                 Health Services

By 1973 in Judea and Samaria, health services were run by 911 local employees under the supervision and with the help of 12 Israelis.  Jordanian law was still in force over services such as this.  There were 15 hospitals with 1,042 beds.  8 were run by the Military Government and others by the UN Relief and Works Agency and private groups.  There were 92 physicians which exceeded the pre-war strength of 85 physicians.  The nursing staff amounted to 360, also exceeding the pre-war numbers.

They had 95 clinics, 53 being non-government, and 23 government stations for mother and child care.  Israel's health services were also open to people of the areas and thousands came to those hospitals every year.

By 1973 in the Gaza Strip and Sinai, medical treatment was a state service under local law and fully financed by the Military Government.  Egyptian personnel departed quickly in 1967's Six Day War and left only 42 doctors here compared with 90 before the war.  Israel tried very hard to get the rest of the personnel to return.  There are 5 government and 2 other hospitals with a total of 967 beds.  The shortage of doctors and imperfect equipment that Israel found made it necessary for a large-scale Israeli aid.  Out-patient clinics of Israeli hospitals served the people and Israeli specialists visited the hospitals as advisers.  El-Arish's hospital had been abandoned by the Egyptian staff.  The Israeli hospital, Tel Hashomer, adopted it.  The building was repaired and Israeli doctors, nurses and administrators are in charge.  A health center with its own X-ray institute and laboratory was manned by an Israeli team.

By 1973 in the Sinai which had a small population, the people were facing great distances and poor roads. The command operated a mobile clinic with both local and Israeli personnel.  In the larger Beduin camps, clinics had been set up and IDF doctors and orderlies helped out.

In 1922, the British, who held the mandate of Palestine, gave away 80% of the land decided by the League of Nations to become the Jewish National Homeland, to be Transjordan.  Some Arabs already lived there. Emir Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, King of Jordan, ruled from 1921 to 1951.  He was born and raised in Mecca, Hejaz, Saudi Arabia.  Non Jews on the 1931 census came there from 24 different  countries.  Arafat came from Egypt.  In 1931 it was found that Non Jews coming into Jerusalem seeking work were from the Palestine territory, Syria, Transjordan, Cyprus, Egypt, Hejaz-Nejd, Iraq, Yemen, Other Arabian Territories, Persia, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Tripoli, Tunis, Albania, France, Greece, Spain, UK, USSR, USA, Central and South America,  and Australia.  Therefore, those calling themselves Palestinian Arabs were not all native but had immigrated within the last 100 years.  (Joan Peters, p.227)

October 6th to the 26th of 1973, Israel was attacked in the Yom Kippur War.  " This came about by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel  as a way of recapturing part of the territories which they lost to the Israelis back in the Six-Day War.  The war began with a surprise joint attack by Egypt and Syria on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the most holy of Jewish holidays.  This was a 25 hour day of fasting  and asking G-d's forgiveness of any of their sins.   Egypt and Syria crossed the cease-fire lines in the Sinai and Golan Heights respectively. Eventually Arab forces were defeated by Israel and there were no significant territorial changes."

Israel is made of not quite 8,000 square miles and has 7.5 million people (6 million Jews).  It is a little smaller than Massachusetts  which has 8,262 sq miles and  New Jersey which has 8,729 sq miles .  Compare this with Texas, USA which has 266,874 sq miles.  Egypt has 384,300 square miles.  Syria has 71,500 sq miles.  Lebanon has 4,000 sq miles. Former President Bush has remarked upon looking at how small Israel is,  that his Prairie Chapel Ranch in Texas, made of 1,583 acres or 6.4 km, (about 4 miles) has 3 miles of frontage and includes 7 canyons.

The Israel Defense Forces defeated the massed Arab armies in 1967 which were menacing Israel's frontiers.  Judea and Samaria (West Bank of the Jordan) had been until 1948 part of the British Mandate of Palestine.  Between 1948 to 1967 it was ruled by Jordan, which annexed it in 1950 illegally.  By July 1972 almost a million Arabs lived in the administered areas of Judea and Samaria and Gaza.  640,600 Arabs lived in Judea and Samaria on an area 5,900 sq km-2,270 sq miles. This is a little larger than the state of Delaware,  USA which is made of 2,026 sq miles.   Judea,  Samaria and East Jerusalem have a population of 2,622,544 today which includes 500,000 Jews of which 192,000 are living in East Jerusalem.  That makes a little over 2 million Arabs living here as of 2012.  The population of Delaware as of 2011 was 907,135.

The Gaza Strip had also been, until 1948, part of the British Mandate of Palestine.  Starting in 1948 to 1956-57, following the Sinai War, it was administered by an Egyptian Military Government until 1967.  Egypt did not annex it. By July 1972  388,600 Arabs lived in the Gaza Strip and Northern Sinai on an area 360 sq km-140 sq miles.  This is about 1/6 of Rhode Island, USA.  Today's population is about 1.7 million whereas Rhode Island's population, is 1,051,302.  According to 1/6 of this, it should hold only 175,217 people.  .
The population was mostly Moslem.  The smaller Christian communities of Greek Orthodox and Latins were mainly living in Ramallah, Bethlehem and Beit Jala in Judea and Samaria.  Druze Arabs lived on the Golan Heights.  Today, Bethlehem and Ramallah have been populated mostly by Moslems.  Beit Jala was in 1993 controlled by the Palestinian Authority and now only 60% are Christians there with 40% Muslims.

Israel's basic policy by 1973 was to achieve security for Israelis and Arabs.  They wanted all to live normal lives without losing contact with Arabs in other countries.  Israel tried to make possible a rapid economic development.  they tried to encourage co-existence and cooperation between Arabs and Israelis as an example for relations to come between the two people.  The Administrative areas were tranquil then and thriving.  Open bridges on the Jordan allowed movement in either direction between the areas and the Arab states.  Israel was so trusting.  Both groups had been separated up to 1967 and were enjoying the beginnings of a peaceful and fruitful co-existence.  Israel had high hopes that one day they would make a meaningful contribution towards a transformation of Arab-Israeli relations from conflict into cooperation.

Little did Israel realize that in some 30 years, by 2005 the almost 9,000 Jews living in Gaza would be forced to leave, which was Ariel Sharon's idea, making Gaza Judenrein, doing so in the name of peaceful existence as they weren't able to live together peacefully. UN had said in 1947  that it was to be land for the Palestinian state. The 1948 war ended with Israel in control, but gave the area to Egypt to control in negotiations.  Jews had lived in Gaza since Samson and Delilah of the Bible.  They were there in 1929 when Arabs rioted in many places and attacked helpless Jews.

Jews in 2005 pulled out of 21 towns.  This will not be repeated in Judaea-Samaria.   This has given the Arabs a platform where they have continually shot rockets, mortars and missiles into southern Israel, trying to kill everyone.  What had happened was that a new and evil group, Hamas, appeared, taking over Gaza and suddenly was voted in "democratically" by the Gazans who were following the Muslim Brotherhood precepts of continuing to destroy Israel. Israel did all it could do to treat Arabs in the administered territories more than fairly, but they have turned to their own people instead who are terrorists against Israel.   To our dismay, such people as Jimmy Carter, former American president, has sided with the Hamas terrorists, backing their plot.  What was hoped for in 1973, interrupted by war in October, seems to be a far distant hope and dream.  A Two State Solution is at an end.  It is impossible as far as most can see.  Gaza cannot be a good neighbor and only a good neighbor can ever be allowed.

The Palestinian Authority (PA)  of Judea-Samaria was an interim self-government body established in 1994.  By this  year of 2013, it became a non-member observer state in the UN.  Fatah renamed itself the "State of Palestine" but their authority is only over Judea-Samaria and does not include Gaza, ruled by Hamas.  Fatah and Hamas have only been able to agree to a few things for a short period.  They fight for total control.

Oregon & Its Counties (above)
Population in Israel
Compared to Oregon, USA
Nadene Goldfoot

I live in Oregon. It's hard for most of my neighbors to picture how small Israel is. For instance, Oregon has 3,825, 657 people, or about 3.8 million. Israel has 7, 695,000. Out of this 7.5 million, 5,802,000 or 75.4% are Jewish; 1,573,000 or 20.4% are Arabs and 320,000 or 4.2% are probably Christians and others.

In size, Oregon is 97,073 square miles with land making 96,184 square miles. It's 395 mile from east to west and 295 miles from north to south.

Israel, by contrast, is made of 10,762 square miles including Judea and Samaria, so Oregon is about anywhere from 10 to 12 times bigger, which also depends on what you are including as making up Israel. Including just the Golan, it is 8,019 square miles. Israel is 290 miles long and including Judea and Samaria, administered areas, is anywhere from 71 to 84 miles wide, or in one place could be as little as 6 miles, depending on what you're counting. It used to be the joke that one didn't put their arm out of the window of the train or it would be in Jordan. The state of Virginia is close to Israel in population with 7,882,590.

There are 192,800 Jews living in East Jerusalem, and this is because Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. In all of Jerusalem there are 795,291 as of January 1, 2010. About 464,527 are Jews with 228,690 being Arabs.

Tel Aviv, the 2nd largest city has 404,400 population. There were around 16,000 in Safed, where I lived from 1981-1985. By 2008 the population had grown to 32,000.

67.1% of the Jews in Israel were born in Israel, so they are called Sabras. 22.6% are immigrants from Europe and the USA, of which I had been one. 5.9% were born in Africa and 4.2% were born in Asia.

There are 194 countries in the world and Israel is one of the smallest, but there are only 192 countries that are members of the U.N. The Vatican City and Kosovo are not members. Many think Taiwan should be included, and if they are counted, would make 195 countries.

So though Israel has almost twice as many people as Oregon has, it is about 1/12th in size. That's probably why most Israelis are living in high-rise apartment buildings. Very few actually get to live in a home. A few homes that I saw in Safed had been dug out of an earthquake that happened over 100 years ago. They were able to renovate the structure into a lovely home, though. I remember a wonderful use of potted plants inside the living room which made it look lovely. Doug Silverstein, author and retired principal also lived in a house. I loved to visit him, being I had never lived in an apartment building before and fought the elevator in my first experience in Safed.

Israel, Judea and Samaria (West Bank) and Gaza Strip

Size and Population
Nadene Goldfoot

According to the CIA Report, Israel is made of 22,072 square km. Water available consists of 430 square km. The coastline is 273 km. It is slightly smaller than New Jersey. The population of Israel is 7,353,985 which is including over a million and a half Palestinian Arabs.

To be exact, the population is 7.6 million with 5.7 million Jews and 1.5 million Arabs. Judea/Samaria or the West Bank is 5,860 square km. Water available is 220 square km. It is slightly smaller than Delaware. The population is 2,514,845.

The Gaza Strip is made of 360 square km and has no water source. it is a little more than twice the size of Washington D.C. The coastline is 40 km long. The population is 1,604,238 led by the Hamas terrorist organization.

The West Bank and Gaza together are 6,220 square km. That's 360 sq. km more than Israel. Their population comes to 4,119,083. Israel contains about 2 million more minus the Palestinians that are Israeli citizens. Israel sits in the middle of two beligerent people, the Hamas terrorists who want to wipe Israel out and Fatah, who are most likely also wishing for Israel's disappearance.

Palestine Refugee Problem, Not Israel's

Nadene Goldfoot
I remember what propaganda is from WWII. That is exactly what's happening right now about Israel. The big lie that young people are swallowing is that the Arabs were forced to leave Israel in 1948 at the creation of our state. This is a huge lie.

Shmuel Katz, or rather, Samuel Katz, is the author of Battleground; fact and fantasy in Palestine. I read this book ages ago to be knowledgable about the actual events. Shmuel was a member of the first knesset and died in May 2008. He was a biographer and essayist.

The period of 1948 was well documented by many reporters. No one spoke about Arabs being forced to leave by Jews. Neither did any Arab spokesmen comment about such a thing. Why did they leave? George Hakim, Greek bishop of the Galilee told a Beirut newspaper that the refugees would return in a week or two because their leaders promised them that the Arab armies woud crush the "Zionist gangs" very quickly and there was no need for panic or fear of a long exile. Iraq's prime minister, Nuri Said said, "We will smash the country with our guns and obliterate every place the Jews seek shelter in. The Arabs should conduct their wives and children to safe areas until the fighting has died down." An Arab commented in the Jordanian newspaper Al-Difaa, "The Arab governments told us, get out so that we can get in. So we got out, but they didn't get in."

No one expected the ragtag group of Jews to win, but they did! The fact that there are these refugees is the consequence of the action of the Arab states in opposing partition and the state of Israel. The Arab states must share in the solution of this situation and they never have. Instead they have used it as a ploy against Israel. The only state that has taken in refugees has been Jordan, and that was not an easy feat for them.
There were two bad incidents; at Ramle and Lod where Arab civilians were driven out of their homes by Israeli soldiers. At the village of Deir Yassin, we had a massacre created by novice Israelis fighting for their lives, also. That was it during the whole period.

Arabs evacuated numbered 420,000, confirmed by the UN and Arab sources as well as by Jews. The UN provided them with food, shelter, clothing and medical assistance. Because of this, Arabs from all over the area arrived for the handout. The UN had no way to identify people. Everyone signed as refugees to get the free aid. By December 1948 the relief agency was feeding 750,000 and by July 1949 they were feeding a million. Then the Red Cross International Committee joined the group and recognized any destitute Arab in Palestine as a refugee, so 100,000 were added to the list. Now we have a 3rd generation of Arabs all together as "victims of Israeli aggression" and demanding the right of return."
