THE RETURN: Our Special Israel: What Makes It As Unique As It Is

Nadene Goldfoot

We're in the Time of Return
This is Joseph and some of his brothers, of the 12 Tribes of Israel
Judah (Jews) are here in Israel, probably some are of Benjamin,
and we know where the other 10 might be-places like
Afghanistan and Pakistan (Pashtuns) , and other places and they've been
entering already.

Israel is the only Jewish country in the world out of the 195 countries here.  It is the 99th in population and size.  Today the population is 8,655,535 and the land is only 21,640 km sq.  Jews from every corner of the world have already arrived and have been living here, maybe from all 193 at least!

Their 2 national holidays are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

It's borders will never be closed to Jews.  Jews happen to make up on 0.01% of the world population!  We have only about 6 million in Israel, 6 million in the USA and 2 million scattered throughout the world-mostly in Europe and S. Africa.  So let's look at Israel and see who lives here.

When I made aliyah in 1980, I took a cab from the airport to Haifa, where I would attend 10 months of classes at an absorption center in Hebrew and prepare to teach English to children who read from right to left. All new immigrants do this, either for a term of 3 months for the general public to 10 months like me, professionally a teacher.

In this city one would see the Bahai golden domed Shrine and gardens.
I saw the Bahai Center in Haifa.

Bahai is a religion that started in Iran in the 1800s.  It was an offshoot of Islam that became its own separate religion as it taught the unity of all religions and the need for world peace.  It's people were persecuted and declared an illegal religion in Iran.  The people were exiled.
They have their new home in Haifa. Evidently people of this faith are citizens here.

Haifa reminded me of Portland in that it's a port city, but on the sea.   I walked every day for an hour with my German shepherd and everyone wanted her. I had to get used to not having a car, but bought one later on that came over directly from Italy.  It was a red Fiat.  Such a life caused me to lose a lot of weight, which I needed to do.  Oh, life in Israel was very healthy!

Here I am with my dog, Blintz
and my our red Fiat.  This is the building we live in
on the bottom floor.  I have a huge patio outside my door
where I can hang clothes.

Druse live in Israel.  They are a large population who also broke away from Islam in the 900s.  Israel was the 1st state of having an autonomous religious community.  They even have their own religious courts who administer Druze religious law.

Druze IDF

They felt that since they are full citizens, they should accept the responsibilities of other Jewish citizens as well and they serve willingly in the IDF.  We see many bravery in these soldiers who have fought in Israel's many wars with people who will not accept a different religion;  Judaism  in their midst.  I met a lady who was a Druse who was here as a speaker for Israel and she was wonderful!  She impressed me so much as a gung-ho Israeli and I'm sure she did a wonderful job as a speaker for Israel.  She and her people are the ones who know just how amazing Israel is compared to all the other countries in the Middle East as far as freedom of religion goes.

In Jerusalem, which sits on a mountain top,  you see the Dome of a Mosque and the cross of a Christian church.  Somewhere down there is the Western Wall  where Jews pray.  This city dates back 3,000 years to King David.  The city had been walled, built about 45 years after Columbus discovered America.

There are Christians living in Israel.  They are a small minority and are very diverse, most being Eastern Orthodox that belong to churches of Eastern Europe and the Middle East that split with Roman Catholicism in the Middle Ages of the 1100s and 1200s.  This group is joined with other Catholics, Protestants, Copts (from Egypt) and others.  Most are Arabs.  Lots of tourists come each year that are Christians and join them in Jerusalem, visiting shrine in Bethlehem and the tomb in the Church of the HOly Sepulcher.

Arabs are the largest minority in Israel.  Most are Muslims who also enjoy freedom of religion as well as having control of their holy places, though Jordan does control the Temple Mount, especially the rules about anyone's prayers there.  And that's a long story dating back to Moshe Dayan.  Arabs are not required to serve in the IDF.  Israel does not expect them to fight their brothers.
They serve in the Knesset and have full citizenship; not treated like 2nd class citizens.

Women serve in IDF
IDF female soldier

Unlike Islam, Israel's law of marriage is that a man can only have one wife at a time.  Child marriages are illegal.  Women have equal rights.  It's like the USA.

It's a Jewish country, making up about 80% of the population, but these Jews are from every corner of the world.  There are a few who are either secular or orthodox and from the West and most likely speak English and are from England, USA, Australia, etc.  Some are descendants of a small segment remaining whose ancestors were from Jerusalem and never left, being children of the Halutzim.  There are Holocaust survivors' descendants and descendants of Arab oppression of the Middle East.  Getting into religion, there are Orthodox Jewish sects that are strong Zionists and those who believe that a Jewish state can only be created by Divine intervention and refuse to recognize the government which is Iran's stand, and possibly still all of Israel's neighbors.  There are 2 off-beat Jewish groups, the Karaites and the Samaritans who separated from the main body of Judaism over a thousand years ago but still practice their own way of Judaism.

Kurds spoke an Aramaic dialect up to modern times.  It's similar
to the language of the Babylonian Talmud and of the Nestorian
Christians in Kurdistan.  in the late 1800s the Jewish community
was estimated to number 12,000 to 18,000 scattered in many villages and townlets and were merchants, peddlers, and craftsmen.  In the 1900s the numbers increased so those living in Persia numbered from 12,000 to 14,000.

Kurds live in Israel.  Kurdistan was a high mountain region between Turkey, Iran and Iraq and in the times of Ezra some of these Jews wandered into land of Kurdistan.  After 1948, many of the Kurdish Jews from all over emigrated to Israel and settled in or near Jerusalem

Joining with Israel in these days of returning finally are the Ethiopian Jews.
They came first when I was living in Safed and saw them move in right across the street from my apartment.  They spent time in the hospital first, getting ready to join our community.  They called themselves the Beta Yisrael (House of Israel).  They became Jews, according to their own tradition, by descending from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.  A group of them put on an art show in our community center.   Pretty soon these shy, slender and beautiful people with their fine features were acting just like the Sabras (born in Israel), pushing their way into lines in the supermarket.  They knew the laws of the Torah literally, but had no knowledge of the Talmud and traditions that followed it as they were isolated from the rest of the world.   All this time, they have believed they were the only Jews left in the world.  Operation Solomon and Operation Moses brought over  Ethiopians.  Others have still been coming.

Natan Sharansky on Right, the prisoner in Russia
that Sarah, the Hebrew teacher was helping He's
with his wife.  He'is an Israeli politician, human rights activist and author who, as a refusenik in the Soviet Union during the 1970s and 1980s, spent nine years in Soviet prisons.

Russian Jews entered Israel with me in 1980.  My Hebrew teacher had been writing to one who became very famous in Israel, but then he was in prison in Russia.  He was there for trying to learn Hebrew.  So now, teacher Sarah was sending letters that were helping him.  We English speakers in our Hebrew classes were joined by about 40 Russians who were also preparing to teach English !  We were all studying Hebrew so we could exist easily in Israel.  They learned much faster than I did!  Russians were used to studying languages and I was not.  They could not return to Russia and I could return to the USA with dual citizenship, so Israel helped them out financially.  All these years, churches and synagogues were closed in Russia, a land unfriendly to religion.  Communism is a political system that negates religion.  When the Soviet Union collapsed, the doors opened for the Jews.  By 1968 there were 4379 immigrants from the Soviet Union in Israel.   In 1969-following the Six Day War of 67, there were more than 6,000 Russians per month!  By the end of 1993, the number exceeded 470,000.  Most were highly trained professionals looking for freedom--and good job!  Before, most immigrants were impoverished, war refugees, poor and illiterate.  This was a switch!

People of full or partial ethnic Russian ancestry number around 300,000 of the Israeli population from the immigrants from the Soviet Union and post-Soviet states, and the number of Russian passport holders living in Israel is in the hundreds of thousands.
Most ethnic Russian people in Israel have full Israeli citizenship and are involved in the country's economy on all levels.

I know  a Masai Jew who is the rabbi of his people as well as a lawyer in Israel.  He carries the Cohen gene, discovered in a DNA test.  He was serving in the IDF before he moved permanently to Israel with his family!  That's dedication for a cause.

These immigrants had to have the shock of a lifetime for there were no jobs for all these people.  Whether they were doctors or opera singers, they had to accept jobs as street sweepers and garbage collectors.  Soon things improved.

Probably all the men had to serve in the IDF.  I know my husband, a former air forceman in the USA, was turned down for having a rare medical problem, but another friend with a bad heart had to serve in the IDF.  This is a country where women are also expected to serve, too, for lack of enough men.   My husband and I did 3 days of training with M1 rifles for the Guard, and did that every month after we had moved to Tzfat (Safed).  Also, everyone gave blood at least once.  If you want blood, you have to have given blood.  You never know when you'll need it.

Here in Jerusalem is where our morals stemmed from.  It's where the Knesset resides.  It's why there is freedom and acceptance of man's various religions.
This menorah with image from Jewish history stands outside the Knesset (Parliament) building in Jerusalem.  It's an ancient Jewish symbol, older than the star of David.

Jews Stoned By Muslims at Temple Site in Jerusalem

Nadene Goldfoot

King Solomon (961 BCE- 920 BCE) built our first Temple.  It was built as a shrine for the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred vessels and offerings, with a court for worshipers which was destroyed.   It had consisted of a hall, shrine and the inner sanctum, which was the "holy of holies."  The holy of holies is not mentioned in the Koran but is mentioned many times in the Torah.  For that matter, this very mosque is not mentioned  in the Koran either; only the "farthest mosque".

The holy of holies, called "devir" in Hebrew was where the ark was kept.  It had a raised floor and was windowless.  The ark  was a chest in which the 2 Tablets of the Law were kept, made of acacia wood inlaid and covered with gold.  It was held as being so sacred that even the high priest could see it only once a year on Yom Kipper, the holy day of atonement.  "When the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur, he prayed for the peace of the People of Israel and the entire world." .  From the time of Moses to the Temple, the ark was taken out from the Holy of Holies also  in case of national need to lead the people on their journey and help them in battle.   Legend is that Josiah hid it when the Israelites were attacked by Babylon.   The Temple was destroyed completely by Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylon king  in 586 BCE.

Our 2nd Temple was rebuilt on Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem in 538-515 BCE and destroyed in 70 CE by the Romans .  Surrounding the Temple was the Western Wall, also called the Wailing Wall.  Today, part of the wall still stands in Jerusalem and it is a site where Jews go to pray.  The custom is to put slips of papers with one's prayer in between the stones of the wall.

The Mosque of Omar (3rd holy Muslim site) stands over the site of the Temple Mount, built after 70 CE in the Moslem Period.  It is also called the Dome of the Rock.  It was built in the center of the Temple area (al-Harim ash-Sherif_ in Jerusalem by Caliph Abd al-Malik in about 738 CE to replace the temporary structure set up by Caliph Omar a century earlier.  It is situated on the traditional site of Mt. Moriah.

Moshe Dayan was very careful to allow Muslims the rights to the Mosque. Today the Waqf-the Islamic Religious Authority, with the agreement and cooperation of the Israeli government administer this site.   Extremist Muslims have been stopping Jews from accessing this holiest of Jewish sites in Israel.  Jews are met with attacks who try to get close to the former Temple. Jews are not the only ones wanting to visit.  Most all Christians also expect to visit this site as well.

The site was open from 11am and would reopen from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the afternoon.  However, 30 teen-aged Arab rioters gathered around 10:30 am Sunday morning and started throwing rocks at the groups of  Jews who were touring the Temple Mount.  This day happened to be the end of the holiday of Passover.

The Jewish group was escorted by the police as called for.  6 rioters were arrested.  There are many Jewish laws connected with how one goes up to and walks the grounds of the Temple Mount.  Because the exact location of the "holy of holies" is not known today, great care must be taken by educated, observant Jews who visit the area.

This was a serious attack during such an important religious holiday.  But this isn't the first, just one of many attacks.  On March 8th, 100 masked extremists attacked security forces by throwing rocks.  This was a Friday and it happened right after the end of Muslim prayers in the mosque.  They then threw petrol bombs at the police who had to fire back with stun guns.  Muslim women blocked the Jews.  Those injured by rocks had to be taken to the hospital.

This is Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.  Why is it that the Muslims cannot tolerate Jews who have legal rights to walk near the mosque at certain designated times as agreed with their waqf?  After all, it was the most sacred Jewish site, The Temple, in the first place.  Understanding, sensitivity that Moshe Dayan displayed is not to be given in return to the Jews?  This is deplorable for any religion.  With such a chip on their shoulder now, what would life be like with a Palestine next door as a neighbor?

Bethlehem Loses Christians

Nadene Goldfoot
Bethlehem came under Palestinian control on December 22,  1995 as the Oslo Accords had Israel control transferred.  Bethlehem had 45,000 residents and was the 6th West Bank city to come under the PA rule.  The others were Jericho, Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus and Kalkilya.  Right next door to Bethlehem is the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo.  The PA police are to keep order.

A ceremony saw the transfer, but afterwards, crowds pulled down a fence surrounding the police station at Manger square.  Church bells rang and fireworks were lighting up the sky over the square,  jammed with merrymakers, vendors selling kebab and cotton candy and dancing boys in circles to recorded music.  Arafat's picture was in many windows.  Along Manger Street, many Santa Clauses passed out candy to children.  The Muslims were happy about it.

Not on Christmas day was everyone enthused about the change.  1,200 opponents of the Oslo Accords were outside the city limits rallying with the banner saying, "We have come to dispel the darkness," and vowed that Israel would regain control.  Jews were also upset about Rachel's Tomb being under PA control.  Israel's government did not allow this rally, so they moved to the Mar Elias monastery, north.

King David of Israel was from Bethlehem and crowned there as King of Israel.  His ancestors, Ruth and Boaz were married here, so it is a special city to Jews as well.

"Bethlehem's chief economic sector is tourism which peaks during the Christmas season when Christian pilgrims throng to the Church of the Nativity.  Bethlehem has over thirty hotels and three hundred handicraft work shops. Rachel's Tomb,  an important Jewish holy site, is located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem."  Jacob's 2nd wife was Rachel, who died in childbirth of Benjamin.  Jewish women like to go to her tomb to pray for children.

The Christian community privately expressed fears of falling under the control of Muslim Palestinians, but were afraid of speaking out publicly.  That was 17 years ago.  Today, the Christian population has dwindled.  In 1948 they were  85% of the population of Bethlehem.  It has now shrunk from 20,000 of 1995 to 7,500.

Bethlehem, which is 5 miles south of Jerusalem,  was a center of terrorism during the 2nd Intifada of 2000 to 2005.  Israel then built a security wall around the city in 2005 to fight terror, which may be one of the factors in driving Christians away.  Then again, Christians most likely have family in the US, Canada, Australia, and South or Central America. Christians have sought education and employment out of the city.  They are also suffering from Islamic extremism due to signs of disturbing anti-Christian feelings among parts of the Muslim population, even though they have had a tradition of coexistence.  The Muslims have intimidated the Christians and practice land theft, discriminate in the public sector in employment, along with abuse and economic hardships.  This all makes the Palestinian Christian leaders feeling insecure, and so place the blame on Israel when they speak on record.

At any rate, they expect to have thousands of tourists to celebrate Christmas.

Gaza's Weapons Store is Sudan: Mysterious Attack On It

Nadene Goldfoot
Sudan, in Africa, is the 8th largest Muslim-majority country in the world with 43,939,598 people who happen to have 70% of the population as Sunni Muslims following the Maliki fiqh like most African states.  Islam is not considered the state religion, though.  Way back in 1885, the Mahdi "compelled" Jews and Christians there to convert to Islam.  Sudan had a Jewish community  dating from the end of the 19th century, but few if no Jews live there today. In 1991 Sudan became the vanguard of Islam revolution  on the African continent with Hasan al Turabi's help.  From 1992-1996 he invited  al-Qaeda which was  then based here.

After a coup d'etat by Colonel Omar al- Bashir who executed it for the sake of Muslim values, bin Laden helped Sudan by setting up businesses and camps.  According to Pakistani Ijaz, the Sudanese government offered Madeline Albright chances to arrest bin laden which she wanted to do, but Susan Rice and Richard Clarke were against the idea.

Weapons have been going from the Sudan, defined as a hostile state by Israel,  to Gaza to use against Israel.  Sudan's government have accused Israel of attacking their convoys in 2009 and last December 2011.  Last Spring they accused Israel of targeting a car carrying a high-ranking Hamas official there.  It has become a transit spot for weapons smuggling, going through Egypt to get to Gaza.  Also,Sudan  has become a center for al-Qaida terrorists.

Sudan is threatening to strike Israel over a recent bombing on Wednesday of a weapons factory in Khartoum. Two were killed in the attack.   By doing this they are admitting to making weapons.  They say they have the right to strike back, remarked their Information Minister Ahmed Belal Osman on Wednesday. They immediately asked the US Security Council to condemn Israel.  Their complaint cited that the attack was a violation of peace and security.  How do you like that?

To top it off, our present US government thinks that Sudan is a partner in the War on Terror and thinks they cooperate with us.

Because of the violence in Sudan, 2 million people were displaced and 450,000 have died.  By 2004 the American Jewish World Service was there helping out in camps in Sudan and Chad.  A complication has been the tens of thousands of refugees that swarmed into Israel from 2005 on  because of all the fighting from a civil war going on there. Refugee status has been given to 650.   In 2008 4,000 infiltrated into Israel through Egypt of which 1,200 alone came from Darfur.  The rest of the refugees were Christians from southern Sudan. Not all were found to be political refugees.   The flood has continued but in February of this year, the conditions changed for the better in Sudan so that Israel told them they must repatriate,  go back home.  Israel would give each $1,300 and a plane ticket back or risk being deported. Most have been refusing to leave.  This is certainly a situation that Israel hadn't thought of in the midst of all their other threats to their existence.

Anti-Israel Demonstration at Edinburgh U in Scotland

Nadene Goldfoot
Waving lots of Palestinian flags Wednesday night tells me who was organizing this anti-Israel group. The "Justice for Palestine group" wrote to the university objecting to the invitation asking the man to speak to this school known for its public research.  The Israeli ambassador to the UK was trying to speak at Edinburgh University, the "Athens of the North",  and there they were, all the protesters waving those flags.  Even though Daniel Taub had been invited to speak by the Edinburgh University Politics and International Relations Society, these protesters disrupted by chanting and waving their flags.

Luckily there was the university security group there.  The ambassador had his own protection unit with him as well, and finally the audience must have come under control, but Taub wasn't able to have private meetings as planned with Jewish students.

It was felt that most of the students in the hall wanted to hear the ambassador.  A few weeks ago they had carried out a referendum on whether or not to boycott G4S, a Danish-British security firm that operates in Israel.  The votes were 538 for and 410 against.  The motion needed 1500 votes to pass. " The Scottish trade union movement has pursued a policy of boycotting Israel despite a dialogue with the Jewish community aimed at understanding both sides of the conflict."

Ambassador Daniel Taub is a British born Israeli who attended schools in Britain such as Oxford.  He is currently the ambassador of Israel to the Court of St. James's which is the royal court of the UK.  "Taub is a much sought after lecturer on Middle Eastern issues, international law and negotiation theory. He is frequently invited to appear on television and radio, and lectures widely in universities and policy institutes in Israel and abroad."

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland.  The university is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.  It ranks 6th and 7th in Europe and 21st in the world.  An important ambassador speaking at such a well thought of university's speaking engagement  turned out to be downright dangerous.  It's a sad state of affairs when ambassadors have to travel with their own guards.  At least he had them.

About 30,000 Muslims  live in Glasgow which is about 42 miles away from Edinburgh.  Jews are a smaller group than Muslims in Scotland.  Most Jews lived in Glasgow, also.  Only the Sikhs are smaller than the Jewish group.  The main religious group of Scotland is the Church of Scotland.  The largest non-Christian groups are atheists and then agnostics.  Muslims come next.  Jews number 18,000 in 1950 but have emigrated, leaving about 10,000 there today.  There are about 1,000 Jews living in Edinburgh.

An interesting book out by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman, "When Scotland Was Jewish" goes into history showing that many of Scotland's heroes were Jews from France and Spain who had immigrated to Scotland in the 1100's.  DNA might show that many of today are related to  Jewish families.  Those that stood with the Palestinian anti-Israel group might have had dna of Jews living in Israel today.  This might not make any difference to them, but it is too bad that they are not getting the unadulterated history of the Middle East in a highly rated university..

Is there an improvement?  "Worse still, in 2010, a student at the University of Oxford shouted Itbach Al-Yahud [Slaughter the Jews]” at Danny Ayalon, Israel’s then Foreign Minister."  Protesters were holding up signs saying, "Stop the Occupation!"  They don't even know that Israel is really not occupying Gaza, Judea or Samaria.  They're all under Hamas and Fatah.  Well, they could have heard all the particulars but chose to just yell and shout.  By me, they're not students in any way shape or form.

Abraham  and Isaac and the Akedah and Eid al-Adha
Nadene Goldfoot

How many million make a billion?  It would take 1,000 million to equal one billion.  With about 7 billlion people on earth today,  Jews number only about 13 million in the world.    Jews make up 0.02% of the world population.  Most Jews live in either Israel or the United States.

Christians make up 33% of the total world population with 2.1 billion  followers.  It is the state religion of 16 nations: Armenia, Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, England, Greece, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, Norway, and the Vatican City, of course.  The Roman Catholic Church is predominate with 1.17 billion or about half of the Christian population in the world.

There are 1.57 billion Muslims in the world.  that's 1/4 of the world population.    Fewer than 15% of them are Arabs.  The highest Muslim Arab populations are Egypt with 79 million, Iraq with 32 million , Saudi Arabia with 25 million, Yemen with 23 million and Syria with 20 million.  Iranians are not Arabs but are Persians and they have 74 million Muslims.  Muslims have about 40 countries where they are the majority of the population.

Abraham was the father of both Ishmael and Isaac.  Ishmael's mother was the Egyptian handmaid of Sarah, Abraham's wife who later gave birth to Isaac.  This was the beginning of the rift between Arabs and Jews, probably.  Abraham is the father of Judaism, breaking away from the city of Ur in the Chaldees, which is today's Iraq, where they had been worshipping clay idols as gods.  Being that Abraham's father, Terah, was an idol maker, Abraham knew that this was not a truth, and came to believe in one unseen god.  In order to make a clean break in habits for his family, he took his father and the rest of his family and migrated to a place where Canaanites and Philistines lived and pitched his tent.  He visited Egypt, then returned to live in Hebron.  His nephew, Lot, had migrated with him but separated only to get into trouble with the Elamites, so Abraham fought with the kings of Elam, Shiar and their allies in order to rescue him.  This is when G-d spoke to him telling him that his seed would inherit the land "from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates, and tested his loyalty to him with the ordering the sacrifice of Isaac. "And He said, "Please take your son, your only one, whom you love--Isaac---and go to the land of Moriah; bring him up there as an offering upon one of the mountains which I shall tell you." G-d did not say, "Slaughter him," because He did not intend for Isaac to be slaughtered, but only that he be brought up to the mountain and be prepared as an offering. The Torah does not use the word which signifies the slaying of the sacrificial victim.  From the outset, there was no intention of accepting a human sacrifice, although Abraham was at first not aware of this.  Mount Moriah is the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Abraham was stopped by an angel of G-d who had been testing him. "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad nor do anything to him for now I know that you are a G-d-fearing man, since you have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me".  (Being that Abraham made all the provisions to carry this out, though not wanting to, I believe that human sacrifice at that time and place was not unheard of, though Abraham always had sacrificed animals. It's hard for us to realize that this event occurred about 4,000 years ago.  Look how people have changed in the last 391 years from 1620 when the Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower from Holland to Plymouth Rock.  They believed in witches and burned women at the stake if they were found to be one.

Muslims will be making a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia this week for their annual hajj.  All Muslims are expected to do this once in their lives.  2.5 million were there in 2010.  Many of the concepts they will be remembering are linked to the life of Ibrahim or Abraham.  One of the holy days, Eid al-Adha, is about the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, only in the Koran it is Ishmael that is the son to be sacrificed.  The Ishmaelites lived in N Arabia between Egypt and the Assyrian border who traditionally were the Arab descendants of Ishmael, and modern Arabs still claim this descent.  They are mentioned in Gen. 25:12 ff.  They also had been divided into 12 tribes, just like the Jews' 12 tribes.

The story, first found in the "Old Testament or Torah and later in the 600's CE of the Koran also says that G-d intervened and spared the boy's life where the son is Isaac. ishmael and his mother Hagar had already been sent away.   Jews remember this event as the Akedah found in Genesis 22.  This is read as the portion of the Law on the 1st day of Rosh ha-Shanah, or the Birthday of the world, the Jewish New Year.

At Bet Alpha in the Beit She'an Valley in NE Israel, a mosaic floor was found in a 6th century CE synagogue of the binding of Isaac to the altar.  It pictures two young men waiting with the ass, the ram caught in the thicket, and divine intervention in the form of a hand with Abraham laying Isaac on the Altar.  This is the site of a Jewish village from the 5-6th CE where Kibbutz Bet Alpha now lies.  It is north from Jerusalem and you get to it before you get to Nazareth.

The Mind-Set of the Islamic Movement Towards Jerusalem

Aksa Mosque

Nadene Goldfoot
Raed Sulah spent 5 months in Ramle's Ayalon Prison for assaulting and spitting on a police officer who was providing security at a demonstration sponsored by Sulah in 2007. He was just released on Sunday.

He sees a victory over "occupied Jerusalem and the Aksa Mosque and looks forward to the expulsion of Israeli occupation from both of these places. Nothing is more righteous in his eyes than the cause of taking over Jerusalem and the mosque. After his shout-out that they will cling to every piece of earth in Jerusalem, the crowd responded with cheers and then called out that "we'll sacrifice ourselves over al-Aqsa, Oh Raed."

I don't know why he is acting like there is such a problem for the Muslims in relation to this "Temple Mount." The mosque is under the administration of the Palestinian-led Islamic waqf, which consists of the diretor, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Islamic council. They have been allowed by Israel to retain their authority over the Temple Mount since 1967 when Israel won the battle of the Six Day War when Jordan and all the other surrounding countries attacked Israel.

How easily they get themselves all riled up over a city that is not number one of importance in Islam. It is the 3rd mosque that Muslims need to visit. The first is in Mecca and the 2nd is in Saudi Arabia. It was in Jerusalem that monotheism was declared by Judaism. Here, Muhammad stated in the 8th century that the angel Gabriel took him up into heaven on his horse to be shown signs of G-d. He then went back to Mecca.

The waqf prohibits Jews and Christians from entering the mosque. Israel complies with this demand by stationing Israeli soldiers outside to uphold their Islamic rules.

Yet, here is a Muslim leader plotting the takeover of all of Jerusalem and he's now out of prison.

A Mile From Gaza Border in Israel

What's It Like?
Nadene Goldfoot
Actually, Sderot lies less than a mile from the Gaza border. Eleven months ago Israel had to go into Gaza and bring to a halt the eight years Palestinian terrorists shelled Israel. Now Israel is hit about twice a month, which is a big improvement but still not peaceful.

Children as well as adults had only about a 30 second warning of incoming rockets. Due to donations, the city now has a new indoor playground for the children that has a horizontal climbing wall, mini-soccer field and convertible disco/movie theater. It also has six bomb shelters and rocket-proof, anti-shockwave walls. This opened in June 2009. Now for the first time the children can play without fear.

Israel was complying, I'm afraid, with the world in not being allowed to stop the Palestinians from their terror on Israel's citizens when they started the shelling. Finally the government had to react, and of course they were accused of using too much force. Richard Goldstone put out the horrid Goldstone Report coming down hard on Israel. He was never around nor the UN when children died in Sderot. They didn't even give it a thought as to what life was like for the Israelis for the past eight years. All they do is count casualties, and since the number was higher in Gaza after Israel's incursion, Israel gets the blame.

I wonder if our outlook on life doesn't sway the numbers. Muslim males are rather anxious to meet their 72 virgins while Jews are all for "Life", or as we say, "L'Chaim!". To Life!. I don't know what the Muslim women are anxious about except they seem to be so proud of their terrorist sons. At any rate, we have managed so far to keep our death numbers lower. It also could be that we have fewer numbers to start with, and aim to keep them alive and well.

Does Obama Understand the Arab Mentality Towards Israel?

Nadene Goldfoot
Obama seems to not understand what he has caused the Arabs to surmise and now expect. Our administration is pushing for us to go along with Abbas of the Fatah party of Arabs and accept a Palestinian state next to Israel. This is coming with a lot of strings attached that they again left on their platform as before. They now think that because Obama has taken a new position of pushing Israel like the USA has never pushed before, that he will force Israel to give in to their expectations and needs and the Arabs won't have to do anything in return. In fact, he will favor the Arabs.

We have seventeen (17) Jewish people in the Obama Administration, I am surprised to find. David Axelrod, the Senior Advisor to the President is the most important. Rahm Emanuel is the Chief of Staff. We have Lee Feinstein in as Foreign Policy Advisor. Middle East Policy Advisor is Eric Lynn. I'd like to have a word or two with him! Perhaps this kettle of fish is due to him. He's not giving the advice I'd like to see given. Special Advisor for the Gulf and Southwest Asia to the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is Dennis Ross. Head of the Middle East desk at the National Security Council is Dan Shapiro. I'd like to know their positions and backgrounds in understanding Israel's position and history. What strengths do they bring to advise the President on the Middle East. Being Jewish is not enough. We have Jews of all opinions, many of which are based on nothing but peer pressure and position in society, not on actual facts.

Four decades ago plus a few years at Khartoum's conference, the Arabs rejected peace with Israel. Now in Bethlehem they again did the same thing. The only thing Fatah and Hamas can agree to is their hatred for Israel and their desire to see its destruction. Otherwise they are vying for the position of the top dog, which is now in the hands of Hamas.

They again voted to not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, not to negotiate with Israel at all, and not to end the fighting against Israel. In other words, they'd like to drive Israel into the sea as they pronounced some 61 years ago when they all attacked Israel in 1948 at it's rebirth.

Not only did they come with this declaration for all to see and read and hear, but they have a lot of demands. They want the Israelis to accept the "right of return" of their people, which would overwhelm Israel entirely with more Arabs than can be counted. They want the release of all Palestinian prisoners from Israel's jails. Most of them are in for murdering Israelis. Of course they want Israel to freeze all settlement construction and list the Gaza blockade. The end result is that they want Jerusalem in their hands and all Jews out of it along with any building that has taken place there.

Fatah is now talking about joining up with Iran in an alliance. This is the "peaceful" group that Obama is expecting to create a state of Palestine. Iran is also against any peace process and has voiced their threat of destroying Israel, which Israel takes very seriously. In fact, the Palestinian Chief Negotiator, Saeb Erekat met with Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Egypt already. To make matters confusing, Iran has funded Hamas, their terrorist competitor. Iran seems to like their tactics better, I suppose.

In reality, does Israel have any Palestinian group to work with who truly has peaceful coexistence in mind? There is none. The Palestinian people have again lost any chance of living as others do. Even the king of Saudi Arabia and other leaders are not any help. Perhaps it's not in the cards for a Palestinian state to be next door to the only Jewish state in the world. There's always something that stops the process, and it's not Israel. Israel has been too compliant with trying to get along with the Arabs. Our seventeen Jewish Obama administrators had better hold a conference of their own and re-analyze their strategy in trying to force a peace that has now backfired. I wonder if they have a second plan.

Judaism in the World-Less than 1% of World Population

by Nadene Goldfoot
Israel is the only Jewish country in the Middle East and is fighting for its life, being threatened by Iran's president. It holds as of the 2006 population records 40.6% of the Jews in the world and barely has more Jews than the United States, which has 40.3%. The third country with the most Jews is France with only 3.8% of the Jewish world population, so you can see that most of us are either in Israel or the USA, with teeny pockets of Jews here and there.

Israel is also the only democracy in the Middle East, which is why the USA should be supportive. It's harder to be a democracy amongst Muslims who are gaining in their religious beliefs and seem to revert back to their 7th or 8th century beginnings than being a democracy amongst the freer European nations. Iran is a good example. This means that not only are the Muslims negating friendship to Israel because of their religion but also for their political beliefs. You know the old adage; don't talk about religion or politics with friends. This leaves very little to talk about with their neighbors.

This gives us something to think about, though. Israel holds half of our brothers. It's important for us to remember that they are our brothers and what happens to them can happen to us. That's one reason I'm continuing to work on fighting against lies that I come across about Israel that seem to permeate in the world. When I see things in the newspapers or hear on TV, as I just have this past week, I fight against it with all my knowledge and capabilities. People are not accusing us of poisoning the wells, anymore, but can think of the darndest things to say about us that simply are not true. I hope that everyone will start collecting facts and be ready to verbally defend Israel when you hear false accusations. We cannot remain silent and sluff it off.

Remember what happened in the holocaust. There was too much silence and not enough said in defense. We are lucky to be living in such a free society, but we can't forget our responsibility for others. This is a part of our Judaism; looking out for our brothers, too.

Obama Dictating: Jerusalem Goes to Palestinians

by Nadene Goldfoot
Obama certainly must be making points with the Palestinians and all the Arab countries these days. He is telling them that he is backing the formation of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capitol.

I note that the USA has never had the gumption to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's stated capitol as it always had been in the past. This issue matters a lot to Israelis. In 1948 they were deprived of Jerusalem and it was in the hands of the Arabs because of the division of land originally promised to the newly recreated state. Originally Britain had told the Jewish leaders that they would have land that would have included the area Jordan is in now, but because the sheik wanted his own country and yelled loudly, was given what was promised to the Jews as well as Jerusalem. The Arabs treated Jerusalem terribly. Cemetery tombstones became latrines in their hands as much of it also did. Nothing was taken care of. The land lay in waste. It was when Israel was attacked in 1967 that Israel regained Jerusalem and made it their capitol as it used to be since King David. Would the world expect anything different? Tragically, the USA was not brave enough to recognize this, and treated Tel Aviv like its capitol, I suppose to pacify the Arabs who coveted the much improved city containing lovely hotels for tourists.

That's the whole problem. The land of Israel lay in waste ever since the Jews were overwhelmed in 70AD by the Romans. So many were killed and carted off as slaves, yet there were Jews who remained. The land has never been without their presence. While so many were gone, the land lay barren, becoming an unwelcome desert. There hasn't been anyone living there who made anything out of it to bloom again, until the Jews returned. Today it is a beautiful country and is productive in so many ways, giving back ideas and medical products as well as food to the world. The Arabs who were migrants wandering about never did anything with the land. They wandered back there only to find work from the newly returned Jews who were building. Now that it is lovely again, they want the whole country, including Jerusalem, of course. Obama is going right along with this. Considering everything, I'm not surprised in the least. His interests are not in Israel or its history. He is busy showing the Muslims how he does not show favoritism for Israel.

It's amazing to me that in his zeal he is telling Israel that it does not have the right to build in Jerusalem now, as well as in Judea and Samaria. Imagine if we told France where and where not to build in France. I didn't know he made himself king of Israel. I guess he doesn't know that Israel is also a democracy and people vote there, and his vote doesn't count because he's not a citizen. It's too bad our old friend is becoming so pushy and demanding. It's like a marriage gone sour. Here he's taken the side of the people who have not shown us the common courtesy of recognizing us, and who instead have fired missiles in the thousands at us trying to kill our citizens, yet he's giving them our capitol.

Who loves Jerusalem so dearly? Who created Jerusalem? Who prayed for 2,000 years for their return to Jerusalem? Who does Jerusalem respond favorably to? Who mentions Jerusalem in their Bible? There are Arabs who are citizens of Israel, but there are no Jews that are citizens of Arab countries.

Radical Islam Take-Over of USA

Nadene Goldfoot
Probably because of the Nazi writing of the "Protocols of Zion," Jews are very hesitant to come out with "The Emperor Has No Clothes," but this is what is happening. Islam is trying to take over America. They have realized that they can't win over America with their military prowess, so they're using brain-washing techniques instead.

Many young men in prisons have converted to Islam and are accepting the radical viewpoints. The video below tells of a Muslim doctor in the states that started to research how radical Islam started taking over his beloved country after 9/11, and has tried to reach out to other Muslims but has been vilified by his own people. Now he is an outcast and has been called a "dog." The mob mentality is ruling a people who have never learned to think or reason for themselves.

There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and it is growing. One out of four, 1/4 of the Muslims in the states think that suicide is okay to achieve their goal. This political Islam only offers its people hatred, not love. The Holy Land Foundation, CAIR, and a Muslim leader, Mr. Alumondin, support terror groups in the United States.

People should realize that there is no freedom of religion in Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia. Other religions are against the law. This is a war between the freedom of democracy and barbarism. We are battling for Western civilization. Will we stand up for our freedom that we dearly love and that has made us a model country? That is the question. Events in Europe and England show that the Muslim law of Sharia is getting closer and closer. I just watched a video showing a mob of Muslims chasing English police down the street while shouting, "Allah Akhbar!"

Right now our own United States expects Israel, the only democratic state in the Middle East, to accept whatever Hamas wants to do, which is to destroy Israel. At least that is what it seems to me with our leaders blaming Israel for responding finally after 8 years of shelling from Hamas. Then Israel is blamed because the count of dead is greater on the Palestinian side than on the Israeli side. The USA must realize that we are not trying to get killed, while killing is considered a victory for Hamas ! One cannot discuss peace with a group whose goal is to destroy you. If Israel is destroyed, America will be next.

It's very difficult to imagine a take-over of a religion for me. This has been thrown at Jews so often by the Nazis and other similar groups. It's odd because Judaism is the smallest group in the world, and the Muslims are about to take over the size of Christianity, growing amazingly fast considering all their restrictions and connection with death. Yet, what we stand for is in a completely different direction than Islam. They are our opposite. We are for life, peace and democracy. We ask three times at least, "Are you sure you want to become Jewish?" of anyone who seeks to convert to our religion, while the Muslims have historically converted by the sword and hope to have the world converted to Islam, even by force.

The following was sent to me by a Christian friend. The 30 minutes of watching will be an education. It's a wake-up call.

P.S. A film review that I just found in my this month's Hadassah magazine on page 47 is about "The Monster Among Us". It's about a radical Islamist and right-wing gangs demonstrating and the bruised victims of these attacks. Allen Mondell and Cynthia Salzman Mondell present this film about headstones in England that have been smashed, mullahs telling people to kill Jews in Belgium and the Netherlands and France. Melanie Phillips, British journalist says it's open season on Jews. Others say they fear another Holocaust.
